Metallic Smell Bad Breath

Bad breath, or halitosis, usually smells like rotten eggs. Sometimes other unpleasant smells or odors may also be noticed. The cause could be traced back to sulfur compounds that are released as waste products by bacteria living inside the mouth. However, there are instances when metallic smell bad breath occurs. This unusual symptom could indicate that the individual is suffering from a condition other than simple bad breath.

How to Identify the Problem

Metallic smell bad breath is a rare symptom. Only very few people have metallic smelling breath and usually it is due to an underlying condition that may have caused unusual symptoms like metallic smell bad breath.

It should also be noted that persons who claim to have metallic smell bad breath may only describe the condition as such because their sense of smell is a little off, due to viral infection or some other cause. As such, metallic smell bad breath may well turn out to be illusory for these people. That?s why it is important to have a doctor confirm the symptom first.

There are many things that can cause a metallic taste in the mouth. But having a metallic taste in the mouth does not mean that the odor coming from the mouth is also metallic. Stated otherwise, you should not make the mistake of assuming that you have metallic smell bad breath if you experience a metallic taste in your mouth.

What Causes the Problem?

As previously mentioned, metallic smell bad breath may be due to an underlying condition that the individual is not quite aware of. For instance, stomach problems, such as heartburn, jaundice, metal poisoning, and other types of poisoning, has been known to cause a metal-like taste and create a metallic smell bad breath. Dental problems, many drugs, and pregnancy are also factors that could make a person prone to this condition.

If you have any of these problems, then you now have an idea where this metallic smelling breath comes from. But again, consult your doctor before making any assumptions about your condition. Getting a second opinion would not hurt either.

Treat the Problem

Since metallic smell bad breath is just a symptom of a completely different condition, solving the condition is the best treatment option you have for metallic smelling breath. But while undergoing treatment for the underlying problem, you can temporarily solve the malady of metallic smell bad breath by taking strong breath mints or other strong flavors that can overpower an unpleasant one. Lemon cloves and cinnamon are often very effective for temporary relief.

Furthermore, oral hygiene is a must, whether you have bad breath or not. There are over 170 different types of bacteria that thrive in your mouth, feeding on the leftover foods there. As they digest these foods, they release odorous substances that cause bad breath. By keeping your mouth and teeth clean, you minimize the population of bacteria in your mouth and cure bad breath.

Dental

The hectic pace of today's adult lifestyle often leaves little time for the daily oral health care routine needed to prevent cavities and periodontal disease. This is unfortunate since periodontal disease is the most common cause of tooth loss in adults.

The Canadian Dental Association (CDA) defines oral health as a state of the oral and related tissues and structures that contributes positively to physical, mental and social well-being and to the enjoyment of life's possibilities, by allowing the individual to speak, eat and socialize unhindered by pain, discomfort or embarrassment.

At any age, a complete oral health home program includes sound nutritional habits. Many of the foods that help your body build strong muscles and bones also help build strong, healthy teeth and gums.

The increased consumption of highly processed foods containing carbohydrates (eg sugars) and in particular, the regular snacking on these types of foods exposes teeth to an increased risk of dental disease.

Researchers from University at Buffalo found that obesity is a significant predictor for periodontal disease, independent of age, gender, race, ethnicity, and smoking.

?The presence of periodontal infection combined with obesity may contribute to type 2 diabetes and its complications, such as coronary heart disease,? said Kenneth A. Krebs, DMD and AAP president. ?Although further studies are needed, people should remember that living a healthy lifestyle along with daily brushing and flossing and visiting your oral health care provider is always in fashion.? Gum disease is the most common chronic infection in the world, affecting more than half the population at any one time. Symptoms can include inflamed or bleeding gums, bad breath, swollen or receding gums and loose teeth, which may eventually fall out. Cleaning teeth thoroughly using a soft toothbrush, flossing and not smoking, can prevent the problem.

How to Cure Chronic Bad Breath

Adults and children alike suffer from chronic bad breath occasionally or regularly. Although common, chronic bad breath is not a laughing matter as it might signal a more serious medical problem that needs to be treated and solved.

So how can you treat or cure chronic bad breath?

To successfully cure chronic bad breath, it is first necessary for you to note and understand its underlying causes. Once you have identified what causes chronic bad breath to occur, it would then be easy for you to find a solution and treat it.

So to begin, note and understand that there are several possible causes of chronic bad breath. The list may include poor oral hygiene, periodontal infection or gum disease, intense buildup of odor-causing bacteria in the mouth, chronic sinus infection, candidiasis, unfavorable habits like smoking and drinking, poor digestion, liver and kidney disease, constipation, so on and so forth.

Given those underlying causes, it is now easy for you to agree that chronic bad breath is not something that should be ignored. So when you notice that something is wrong with your breath, start looking for a possible cure or treatment of chronic bad breath.

Well, there is one particular solution that is deemed effective to cure chronic bad breath ? the use of low concentrations of carbamide peroxide. This treatment is actually revealed by certain researches at the Academy of General Dentistry?s 53rd annual meeting which was held in Washington, D.C. just recently. According to some reports, the carbamide peroxide is an odorless ingredient that can not only be used to disinfect and bleach teeth, but can also cure chronic bad breath.

However, before you can apply the carbamide peroxide to cure chronic bad breath, you need first to consult a dentist who can customize trays or mouth guards that are made to fit tightly around your teeth. This is very much important as the solution is applied by placing it in the tray and into your mouth where it remains for an hour. Once the treatment is done, you maybe required to do the treatment by yourself at home. You can cure chronic bad breath at home for an hour everyday. Many of those who have tried this cure have claimed that after three treatments, you will notice a significant change in your breath.

There are also other solutions formulated to cure chronic bad breath. But, the truth still remains that to successfully cure chronic bad breath, you need to work closely with your dentist to find out other possible health concerns associated with chronic bad breath. This is also highly advisable to fully identify the most suitable plan for treating this condition. Chronic bad breath is no laughing matter, after all.

Tooth Whitening FAQ

What Is Tooth Whitening?
Tooth whitening is a process that ?bleaches? the teeth, removing it of stains on the enamel and dentin to affect a lightening of any discoloration present. A common tooth whitening procedure uses carbamide peroxide poured over a custom mouth-guard worn over the teeth.

?external stains: tobacco, tea, coffee and juices like grape and apple, coffee, tea and tobacco
?internal stains: excessive fluoride (during teeth formation), aging, trauma, nerve deneration, tetracycline (while teeth are forming)

Only professional whitening procedures such as the custom tray bleaching can remove both internal and external stains. Over-the-counter tooth whitening products like toothpastes only remove the external stains.

Who Can Undergo Tooth Whitening?
Anybody can benefit from a tooth whitening procedure. A certain procedure though may be less effective for some people. Patients whose teeth are stained by tetracycline may experience difficulty in achieving the desired whiteness. People with veneers, crowns or fillings may also experience uneven whiteness because these dental fixtures do not whiten along with the rest of the teeth.

Can A Pregnant or Nursing Woman Bleach Her Teeth?
It is recommended and dentists agree that a pregnant woman and nursing mother should avoid any teeth whitening procedure. The reason for this is there?s no clinical studies done yet to find out the effects of the bleaching agents to a woman?s health if she?s pregnant or nursing.

Whys Are There Teeth That Do Not Whiten Evenly With The Rest?
The sides of your teeth and the biting edges whiten more quickly than the rest. This is so because of the thicker enamel in these areas. Teeth with thicker enamel respond faster to the bleaching agent than teeth with thinner enamel. Continue with your whitening procedure and the whiteness will even out eventually.

Is Tooth Whitening Safe?
The most preferred tooth whitening procedure is the custom-fit tray bleaching that uses carbamide peroxide. This procedure, when done under the supervision of an oral healthcare professional or a dentist, is safe. There?s no danger of the bleaching agent harming your teeth and gums. It also does not damage the enamel or cause any tooth weakening. The only short term side-effect is tooth sensitivity which goes away quickly when the process is stopped.

If your have any more questions that concern you but are not discussed in this article, consult your dentist. The more you know about tooth whitening, the more confident you will be of any procedure you will choose.

The Importance of Dental Hygiene

Believe it or not, I know a lot of people that do not seem to be aware of the importance of Dental Hygiene. It is not just to make your teeth look white or to have that perfect smile? but to also ensure that your teeth will simple not fall out of your head! Even by following less than basic oral health is a better start than forming no habit of it what so ever.

Dental Hygiene is used with different methods, whether it is whitening creams to a simple toothbrush. If you care for your mouth you can consider yourself to have a healthy mouth. Some people are just too lazy, either that or they claim to not have any time to brush or floss. Unfortunately this can lead to oral diseases such as Halitosis, Gingivitis, Gum Disease, Tartar, Plaque and so much more.

If you want a clean, healthy and white smile then you must be willing to perform the correct oral hygiene. If you do not brush your teeth, if you even start brushing your teeth 2-3 times a day, you will find the pleasure of whitened teeth. If you are always on the go, then even carrying around mouthwash can make a big difference by killing all of the plaque, gingivitis and bacteria that is found in your mouth.

By following these simple steps, your Dental Hygiene will rocket sky high, and your teeth will be in a lot better shape and less likely to be prone to damage or infection.

Overcome Your Fear of the Dentist with Oral Sedation Dentistry

Are you afraid to see a dentist? Or, has a member of your family expressed anxiety and an unwillingness to see a dentist? While some people seem to be able to go in for the latest in cosmetic dentistry or teeth whitening techniques, others cannot seem to get themselves to the dentist for a routine check up. Dental anxiety is a very common condition affecting millions of people. People may fear the pain, or the drills and other equipment associated with dentistry. They may also have memories of unpleasant dental experiences from their childhood.

Many people with dental anxiety put off proper dental care for years. However, unsightly, broken or missing teeth can have a negative impact on your self-esteem, social life, career and health. Gum disease and tooth decay will not go away if ignored. Ignoring these conditions can lead to needing to have teeth removed and other serious, expensive dental procedures. In addition, unhealthy teeth and gums have been associated with heart disease.

One option available to help people overcome their fear of dentists is oral sedation dentistry. With this method, the dentist prescribes a pill or liquid to be taken by mouth, usually one hour before the procedure. The medication makes you drowsey and very relaxed. It also has somewhat of an amnesic effect. However, you are not unconscious and can converse with the dentist and dental technician throughout your procedure. Depending on your dentist's plan, you may be able to have years of problems corrected in a short period of time due to the fact that you are sedated. After your dental appointment you should not drive, so someone needs to be available to drive you home.

The advantages of oral sedation over unconscious sedation are that it is much less expensive and easier on the body than having to undergo intraveneous sedation methods. Most people have no problems taking the medication.

How do you find a sedation dentist in your area? There are several ways. Your health insurance company may be able to recommend one. Check the local yellow pages. You may find ads for dentists specializing in sedation dentistry or ads for dental referral agencies. You can also search on the internet for a sedation dentist.

When you find a dentist that offers sedation dentistry ask for an appointment to discuss your concerns before committing to any exams or procedures. You will probably find the dentist and the office staff to be caring and compassionate people who are willing and able to help you overcome your fears of dentistry. Don't let your fears keep you from having the healthy, attractive smile you deserve.

How to Detect Periodontal Gum Disease

Periodontal gum disease is a bacterial infection in the gums around the teeth. The first stage of periodontal gum disease is gingivitis. There is usually no pain or discomfort experienced in this stage and that is why gingivitis can easily progress to a more serious condition called periodontitis. Periodontal gum disease is the leading cause of adult tooth loss. In addition, the bacteria that causes gum infection and disease is associated with the development of strokes and heart attacks.

These are some of the warning signs of periodontal gum disease:

-Gums that bleed easily when you brush your teeth

-Gums that are red inflamed or tender

-Persistent case of bad breath

-Constant bad taste in your mouth

-Pus appears between gums and teeth

-Receding gums that make your teeth look longer

-Deep pockets surrounding gums and teeth

-Tooth becomes loose

-A change in your bite or teeth does not fit together well

Good oral hygiene is the best defense against periodontal gum disease. Make sure to brush your teeth at least twice a day and floss daily to clean between your teeth. Regular cleaning with the dentist is another necessary preventive measure as well as oral check-ups to detect periodontal gum disease early.

To diagnose periodontal gum disease, a person must undergo periodontal examination. During this procedure, the state of the gums and teeth is checked. The dentist or periodontist looks out for any bleeding or swelling in the gums as well as looseness and sensitivity in the teeth. You may also have to get an X-ray of your mouth to determine any bone destruction.

One important factor that indicates the severity of periodontal gum disease in an individual is the size of the pockets that surround the teeth. Deeper pockets mean a more serious gum disease. Healthy gums have pockets not exceeding 3 millimeters. If it reaches 3 to 5 millimeters or even deeper, this means tartar has invaded the area underneath the gum line. In this condition, there will be apparent bone loss and gum recession.

For professional treatment of periodontal gum disease, you can consult either a dentist or periodontist, who has specialized training and experience in the diagnosis and treatment of gum disease.

There are different methods to treat periodontal gum disease. Your dentist or periodontist will suggest the best treatment for you depending on the results of your exam and the severity of the gum disease.

What are Dental Implants?

Q: What is a dental implant?

A dental implant is a metallic root of a tooth. It is placed in the bone of your jaw by a dentist and allowed to heal in the bone for a period of time until the bone-implant union is strong enough to support a prosthetic tooth. The implant is made out of titanium, a metal that is very well tolerated by the human body.

Q:How is it used to replace missing teeth?

A: When you are using a dental implant to replace missing teeth, your dentist will first determine if you have enough supporting bone to safely place a dental implant to support a prosthetic tooth. The implant is placed into the bone in a very specific surgical procedure to insure that the implant will not be rejected by your body. In order to place the implant in the bone, it is necessary to cut through the gum tissue. The gum tissue will usually be sewed up either over the implant or around the implant after it is placed into the bone. The implant will then be allowed to heal in the bone for several months until the union is strong enough to support the prosthetic tooth.

Q: What kind of dentist do I need to see?

A: Any dentist can place or restore a dental implant. Dental implants are usually placed by Oral Surgeons, Periodontists, Prosthodontists or General Practitioners. Prosthodontists and General Practitioners will usually be the one's who restore the teeth. You should start by consulting with your general practitioner or a prosthodontist and determine how much experience and training they have in the general field of dental Implantology. If you elect to go with one of these practitioners, you can follow their recommendation as to who will actually place your dental implant.

Q: How much do implants cost?

A: Usually around $1500 to $2000. Speak with your dentist.

Q: Are dental implants a permanent solution to tooth loss?

A: Yes dental implants are considered to be a permanent solution. There are, however, some caveats... Sometimes the dental implant does not integrate and it will be lost. In those cases, another implant might be placed that would stay there and become permanent. Sometimes, the restoration will have to be repaired or serviced... As a matter of fact, most restorations will require some degree of maintenance and sometimes replacement over a period of time. You should be prepared for future expenses in this regard.

Q: Are there people who cannot have dental implants?

A: Most everyone can have dental implants placed, but there are some exceptions and some cautions... Patients who are uncontrolled diabetics or have severe psychological problems are not good canditates for dental implants. Patients with severe medical compromises are not good candidates for anything involving surgery although the dental implant procedures can normally be carried out under local anesthesia and are therefor less risky than surgical procedures requiring general anesthesia.

Patients missing a large amount of bone are not good candidates, but bone grafts can be used to replace the missing bone and allow the patient to have dental implants. You should speak very carefully to your dentist and find out just how good a candidate you are for dental implants. If there are things that will make you a better candidate, you should understand them and help to make the decision as to whether they will be implemented.

Those people who require significant bone grafting for implant placement should engage the services of a qualified oral surgeon. Many minor bone grafts can be accomplished by any competent dentist placing dental implants.

7 How to avoid problems with dental implants.

#1. Find out who has implants and ask them who did them and how they came out.

#2. Find qualified ADA specialists, preferably a Board Certified Prosthodontist , to treat you. This is a very demanding area and specialty training is required.

#3. Get a detailed, written treatment plan including all fees and make sure there are no hidden costs.

#4. Get a second Consultation to help you evaluate the first one.

#5. Ask the dentist for names of patients that he or she has treated and for the names of other dentists that he works with. Call them and find out as much as you can about the type of work this dentist does.

#6. Determine the commitment that this dentist has to dentistry and to the area of dental implantology. Does he or she teach? Does he or she publish articles in the scientific dental literature. Is he or she considered an expert in this area of treatment.

#7. Look for someone who is confident, cautious and thorough in his or her approach to your dental work.

#8. Call the state board of dentistry and find out if there are any rulings against this practitioner regarding his dental practice.

#9. Don't be afraid to ask how many of these procedures this dentist has performed successfully.

#10. Ask the dentist about failures. What happens if an implant fails. What are the alternatives if this treatment plan does not work?

Useful Information About Braces

Teeth can be moved by several removable appliances, depending mainly on the kind of problem that you are experiencing. Every dental patient is different, so it is important to evaluate how severe the condition of your teeth is. Your orthodontist will be the one to conduct the evaluation, and he or she will recommend that you use removable appliances if necessary. Braces are one of these removable appliances that can be used to solve your dental problems.

Braces are used to straighten crooked teeth and align upper and lower jaws. They are also effective treatment for temporomandibular joint problems, better known as TMJ. A lot of people experience teeth that did not grow evenly, upper and lower jaws that are not of the same size, and pressure from TMJ problems. If you are one of those people, perhaps you are also bothered by this and this prohibits you from having a beautiful smile. However, with the braces available, your teeth can be straightened and your jaws will be aligned, and soon you will have that beautiful smile on your face.

There are several types of braces available on the market. These are metal braces, ceramic braces, and clear braces. The metal braces are the most commonly used and consist of metal wires and brackets. The ceramic braces, just like the metal braces, also consist of wires and brackets, but the difference is that the brackets are made of ceramic instead of metal. And lastly, the clear braces, which are also known as Invisalign braces, are custom designed braces that are often preferred by adults.

Indeed, braces can be very useful to solve your dental problems. However, you have to bear the discomfort that these can bring during the entire duration of wearing them. You should stop thinking of the inconvenience and instead focus on how you will look like after the braces are removed.

Tips On How To Get Affordable Dentures

Affordable dentures are out there. In fact, you may be able to find same day dentures that are affordable as well. Today, there are millions of people that have dentures at varying ages. Often, this procedure is one that we just do not pay enough attention to. In fact, the costs of this procedure can often be negotiated and lowered based on your needs and your abilities. There are many ways to find affordable dentures for you to use.

Step One: Determine Need

To find affordable dentures, you first need to find out what it is that you need. Will you need full dentures or partial? What size, material, and procedures do you need to allow them to fit your needs? These things are not things that you can just know on your own, though. In fact, if you are to find any cost comparison you first need to know what it is that you need to compare. For this reason, meet with your dentist and talk about the needs that you have. Ask him what he would do and the cost that it would come to. This way, you have a base point to start your research with.

Step Two: Research

You have time to find the affordable dentures that you need. Know that you know what it is that you need, call a few other dentists and determine if in fact they can provide you with the same service for less. In many cases, they will be able to offer you a discount to have your business. In others, the prices will remain the same. Still, it is worth the effort by a considerable amount to check out prices.

Step Three: Determine Payment Terms

If you can not find affordable dentures that fit within your budget, it is time to determine what options for deferred payment are out there for you. First, check with both your health insurance and your dental insurance to determine what they will and will not cover for you. If you are elderly, you may be able to get help through government assistance for your denture needs as well. Do some digging to determine if these options are out there for you.

Then, you can work on determining if you can defer payment over a period of time. If even the affordable dental insurance you have is too much, you can find help through the funding of the payment over time and through payment plans. Most dentists are willing to work with their clients to provide them with the services they need in this way. Just ask.

Finding an option for affordable dentures is out there. You have to take matters into your own hands to find it through. Sometimes, just asking for a discount can help you to get what you need. A good dentist will work with you to provide you with all that he or she can to give you what it is that you need without causing you to not be able to make the necessary payment. Affordable dentures are available, but you have to find them.

Fillings Get Smaller...and Smaller

We all remember going to the dentist, opening wide, and listening with held breath while he examined our teeth for decay. ?Please, no cavities,? we prayed.

With his prickly instrument in hand, our dentist probed every tooth, looking for ?soft? spots where decay had invaded our once hard, pristine dental enamel. And when the point found its quarry, a tiny spot of decay, he would nod and say, ?We?ve got a small one here. We?ll watch to see if it grows into something.?

No longer. Fast-forward to 2004, and the prickly instrument takes a back seat to a high-tech laser probe that lands a preemptive strike in the battle against decay.

Make way for ?Minimally Invasive Dentistry.? The mouthful of words means simply that dentists no longer allow dots of decay to advance into large craters. Armed with the ultimate in high-tech sleuthing, they now set out to find decay?at the earliest possible moment.

?Now we can absolutely eliminate many large fillings that lead to cracked teeth, crowns and other more invasive treatment,? says Dr. Daniel J. Deutsch, of the Washington Center for Dentistry in Washington, DC.

Here?s how it works: The dental decay finder touches the surface of every tooth, each time flashing a digital score that reports the presence of decay. A tooth that scores above a certain number?has at least the tiniest dot of decay.

And getting at the teeny offending area involves another technological wonder. A gentle dental ?sandblaster? uses tiny particles to whisk away decay in layers. The area gets filled in with a tooth-colored liquid that hardens in seconds under a special light.

Patients walk out of the office with tiny fillings.

?And the best part,? says Dr. Deutsch, ?is they have treatment with no needle and no drill!?

The Price of Everything and The Value of Nothing

Although Oscar Wilde used this phrase long before the notion of consumerism entered the mainstream of human life, he nonetheless, gave expression to the less-than-palatable motto of a consumer driven society. We have indeed come to the point where it can be said that we know the price of everything and the value of nothing. Many commentators, although lamenting this modern trend, have advised us that it is a fact of life and that we had better simply get used to it. It certainly does seem like an unstoppable engine driving more and more aspects of our lives. Medicine and dentistry, once in the realm of the healing arts must now bow to the all-powerful god of Commerce.

And what can we expect to receive in return for our allegiance to the Holy Consumer? What wonderful blessings are bestowed upon us? Well, we have more business. We have more customers and that must mean we will have more profits. So now, we are all happy doctors and dentists, financially secure, enjoying a happy fulfilling career.

The Proof of the Pudding is in the Eating
Does that description fit with our experience of daily practice? How many dentists and doctors wake up in the morning with a sense of delight and joy in the new day? How many drive happily to work anticipating a fulfilling interaction with people? How many relish the next treatment challenge?

As the laughter dies down from the crazy images of the last paragraph, maybe we notice our features hardening to a frown. Is that not a feeling of sadness I detect as the truth of our daily routine brings a bitter taste to our own oral cavities? The waking up is more like a long trudge in soft mud, possible only with ?caffeine-assisted? hyper drive. The drive to work is more likely a zoned out absence of feeling, with odd thoughts of possible problems of the day or driving-related incidents intruding harshly on our more comfortable mental anaesthesia. Maybe some of us would like the first 2mls of xylocaine hydrochloride delivered to the anterior frontal lobe of our brains as we begin the first of the daily list!

What have we done to deserve this? What on earth has gone wrong that our dreams of a fulfilling career in a caring profession, dedicated to the elimination of disease, should end up as such an empty struggle? It seems that where we expected a blessing we found only a curse. An enemy called stress has appeared out of nowhere and surrounded us, threatening every aspect of our lives. As if we hadn?t enough to do already, we are now told that we must take steps to reduce stress in our lives. Is it any wonder that we sometimes feel so bewildered!

Arse About Face
Forgive the bluntness of my language but this is the answer to all the questions posed. Arse about face, upside-down, back to front, cart before the horse, disease before health, treatment before prevention, - these are the things that have gone wrong. We are literally travelling in the wrong direction. No wonder then that the landscape looks so bleak.

Let me explain. We, as medical and dental practitioners, are paid for treating disease. Therefore our income depends on the presence of disease. What incentive is there in this model for taking prevention in any way seriously? Because no fee is paid for a condition prevented while a fee is earned for a condition treated, those practitioners seriously and successfully engaged in prevention will most likely starve. Prevention of disease, can therefore seriously damages a practitioner?s health.

It seems very obvious that in a society where prevention of disease is neither honoured nor valued, disease inevitably increases. As the incidence of disease increases, the resources for the treatment of disease become increasingly stretched. This means that we must try to treat more people in less time. We must also try to have more people treated for less in terms of cost. Often the quality of the treatment begins to suffer at this point and morale plummets. When resources for the treatment of disease can no longer keep pace with increasing need for treatment, the waiting list is born. As the need for treatment of disease further increases, crisis develops. Our attempts at solution are based on the same false premises and so they fail. As each ?new? solution is tried and fails, crisis deepens and despair is born.

Rather than a health care system, as we like to call it, we have actually created a disease management system. The people working such a system are under far too much pressure for any comfort or safety, never mind any possibility of happiness or fulfilment. Likely, poor morale will dominate the stressed-out people in the stressed-out working environment. This type of environment can lead to all manner of problems, including poor communication, misunderstanding, conflict and error. All of these ingredients are the ingredients of litigation and as the amount of litigation inevitably increases, the threat of litigation begins to weigh heavily indeed, adding further burden, adding insult to injury.

Does this description resonate with anyone? Is not this a reasonably accurate representation of our current system and worse still, of our current and ongoing trends.

The Need for a Change in Direction
The signposts on the road we are travelling could not be clearer. The most radical change is needed. The god of Commerce has indeed cursed us onto the road to what surely feels like hell. The time has come to stop, turn right around and begin in the very opposite direction. We need to honour and value the prevention of disease. We need to value prevention as highly as any treatment regimen. We need ?Education as Medication?. We need to begin in earnest the broadest education in the knowledge and skills of behavioural and preventive medicine.

People need to know the limitations of modern medicine as well as its wonders, that they not have unreasonable expectations which will inevitably bring disappointment, disillusionment and/or litigation. People and practitioners need training in the various techniques for immune system enhancement that they may contribute fully as partners in the maintenance of health as well as in the management of their conditions and diseases. They (and we) need to be educated in the various psychological strategies that have proven to be of benefit in coping with serious and/or chronic illnesses. They (and we) need to be educated in non-pharmacological pain management that we may reduce the unwanted effects of medication. They (and we) need to be fully respected as whole people, - mind, emotion, body and spirit. They (and we) need to care for, nurture and enhance the health we have, rather than make a mad scramble for a ?cure? when illness strikes. They need and we need to care for ourselves and our health on a daily basis.

The comprehensive preventive educational package needed could easily be funded by the reduction in the amount of litigation which such a patient-centred system would surely bring about in a very short time. Myself and others (doctors, nurses and teachers so far) are passionate about this message which we feel has the capacity to restore the dream of so many dedicated and caring people to have a happy, successful and fulfilling career in a healing profession, which has had the honesty and courage to heal itself before deigning to offer healing to others.

What You Got To Know About Teeth Whitening

There are presently two types of teeth whitening treatments that are open to you.

Actually, the difference lies more on the procedure rather than the treatment yourself. And I?ll let you find out for yourself as you read the following paragraphs.

Over The Counter Teeth Whitening Treatments
If you?re saving up for a lot of expenses that usually comes at the end of the month ? read: utility bills, credit card payments, mortgage payments and the likes ? then maybe, you just have to do with over the counter teeth whitening treatments. But don?t be so glum because it?s not that bad.

The main difference between over the counter teeth whitening treatments and the other is just that in this case, you?ll be the one wearing the white coat. But hey, if you?ve got faith in your abilities, there?s nothing wrong with that, right? And at least you?ll be able to save on money and time. Professional teeth whitening treatment could take forever. You know how some dentists are, ever the perfectionists, wanting to whiten everything, even the deepest recesses of your teeth, something that not even your husband or wife would be able to notice.

There are two primary types of over the counter teeth whitening treatments and these are bleaching solutions and whitening toothpastes. And because this type of teeth whitening treatment is also known as do it yourself and at home teeth whitening treatment, understand that it?s all up to you how the procedure goes. If in doubt of your capabilities, you could always ask for your friend?s help. Anyway, it?s just the measurements that matter most so just remember that using too little of the whitening product is infinitely better than using too much which could lead to unwanted complications.

Professional Teeth Whitening Treatments

There?s only one thing to do then ? and that?s not to mess anymore with your teeth and let a professional handle the problem. Let them do what they do best and all you have to do is sit back, open your mouth, relax and wait for the mirror to show you your new shiny white teeth.

Metallic Taste Bad Breath Symptom

Have you experienced at some point in your life wherein you had bad breath? There?s nothing to be ashamed of if you had, because it?s normal to have one, as long as it?s not chronic. This usually occurs in the morning wherein you have slow saliva production during your sleep. The importance of saliva in our mouth is that it acts as out natural mouthwash that washes away the bacteria and the wastes they produced. In case you had, did you notice any odd taste in your mouth? If you have bad breath (halitosis) condition, it?s likely that it is accompanied by other odd taste in your mouth, like metallic, bitter or sour tastes associated at the rear end of your tongue.

Frequently, most people who smell halitosis won?t describe it as metallic, but those halitosis sufferers might describe it that way if the sense of smell and tastes are a little off. The reason for your taste disorder that relates to bad breath is due to the sulfur compounds produced by the anaerobic bacteria on the rear part of your tongue. The anaerobic bacteria that produce sulfur compounds grow at the back portion of your tongue, is the area susceptible to sour, bitter, and metallic tastes.

Metallic taste bad breath symptom does not actually mean that the air coming from the mouth is bad. It?s just the taste and maybe odor that halitosis sufferer describe. Your doctor is the only one who can tell you if you have the metallic taste bad breath symptom and as to where it is came from.

The causes of your metallic taste bad breath symptom that may create metallic smell bad breath can possibly be from your stomach problems such as heart burn, metal poisoning, other types of poisoning, dental problems, drugs, and pregnancy. Knowing these things, you can now trace your metallic taste bad breath symptom if you have any of the condition mentioned above. Still, it is important for you to consult your doctor for confirmation and advice as to what you can do.

If you think you have a metallic taste bad breath symptom that result to metallic smell breath, you can remedy it with strong breath mints or eating strong flavors that can somehow overcome the unpleasant taste and smell. For temporary relief, you can try lemon cloves or cinnamon. Or, you can put a little amount of baking soda on your dry toothbrush, and then add toothpaste on top of the baking soda and use them to brush your teeth. The baking soda will serve as neutralizer for oral acids and creates a cleaner taste feeling. But, if the problem is due to supplements or medication, you may discontinue taking them or take them at a different time of the day to lessen the effect of metallic taste bad breath symptom.

Root Canal Fear

Hearing that you need a root canal can be a scary thing for a lot of people. The horror stories that have circulated have given a root canal a very bad reputation. Most dentists know this and can be friend or foe in this situation.

Let's take Dentist A. He tells you that a root canal is necessary. He has worry in his eyes, he is looking afraid for you. He tells you he is sorry that this has happened and subconsciously sends the message that a root canal is a bad thing.

The patient of Dentist A will most likely be afraid of the procedure. They have received the message from their dentist, a professional in his field, that a root canal is a bad thing to experience. They are likely to put off the procedure, shun any advice about it, and wait until the tooth is very painful before proceeding with treatment. Waiting until the tooth is very painful will make the procedure unpleasant, just as Dentist A portrayed to the patient. In other words, a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Then there's Dentist B. He tells his patient that the tooth needs a root canal but assures his patient that the procedure is pain free if taken care of right away. He answers the patient's questions in a confident manner, and shows no fear to the patient. The patient gets the message that a root canal is no big deal, just a necessary procedure. This patient might research information on the Internet or library about root canals and go into the procedure knowledgeable and confident that there will be no pain. And that is exactly what happens.

Now, I am not saying that dentists create fear of root canal in their patients where none was present before. Different patients have a different level of fear when it comes to dental work so some will be afraid no matter what is said. What I am saying is that a dentist can take a vital role in allaying the fears of their patients by instilling their own confidence level to the patient instead of catering to the patient's fear or a root canal's bad reputation.

Many people have expressed that they were anxious and worried before having a root canal only to be pleasantly surprised that it was completely pain free. The smile on the patient's face after the procedure was over was a testament to that fact.

Frequent Bad Breath in Children

Bad breath affects children in the same way it affects adults. It is not necessarily a sign of a more serious health condition though, but a frequent bad breath in children can be distressing not only for the child, but for the parents too.

There are a number of causes associated with frequent bad breath in children. Some medical researches have noted that a frequent bad breath in children may be caused normally by mouth breathing due to colds, allergies, sinus infections, or enlargement of tonsils blocking the nasal passages; dehydration; thumb sucking; increased bacterial activity in the mouth at night; infrequent snacking and drinking throughout the day; and improper brushing. All of these are deemed culprits for the reason that they tend to cause mouth drying, which in turn allows the increase of the number of bacteria in the mouth resulting to a stinky breath.

Knowing the culprits, it is now so far understandable that the real root of frequent bad breath in children is mouth drying. So to prevent or cure frequent bad breath in children, it is necessary to maintain the saliva production so to decrease the mouth bacteria. But, the question is in what possible way will the saliva production be increased? Well, there are actually a lot of ways that parents may consider to treat their child?s bad breath. One of the best ways is to ensure that your child gets plenty of fluids throughout the day. This is pretty self-explanatory as less fluids means less saliva, and less saliva means a dryer mouth. So if possible, offer frequent drinks throughout the day as it may helps flush out the odor-causing bacteria in your child?s mouth.

In case of allergy and colds, a frequent bad breath in children can be prevented by treating the problem with saline or a nasal aspirator suctioned in your child?s nose. You can apply this to your child at night before he or she goes to bed. In this way, post-nasal drip as well as mouth breathing can be reduced. Post-nasal drip and mouth breathing as mentioned earlier are two common causes of frequent bad breath in children.

To further treat frequent bad breath in children, try to teach your children the importance of oral hygiene. Make your child aware that proper cleaning of the mouth right after every meal is very important in treating frequent bad breath he or she is suffering from. Also, teach your child the proper way of brushing the teeth. Assist your child, but while you are helping, make sure that your child knows the importance of brushing not only the teeth, but also the tongue and sides of the mouth. Also teach your child the proper way of flossing.

If after doing all of these suggestions mentioned above and you still find your child suffering from frequent bad breath, don?t hesitate to call or see a doctor. A frequent bad breath in children that appears after four to five days of the initial treatment may signal something serious. It could mean an infection, or something that is chronic. So call your dentist or your child?s physician and talk about the problem.

What are Botox Injections and Are They For You?

Everybody wants to look beautiful and forever young but as we grow older, loss of the skin?s softness is expected resulting in wrinkles and signs of aging. One way to slow down this visible aging process is through cosmetic therapies and injections. Currently there are a lot of products in the market that promise you a younger and attractive appearance.

Every day we watch a lot of advertisements of cosmetic treatments, which give assurance of their products. Mostly what we expect from these products is that they will remove our wrinkles and folds that look unattractive. Among these products most popular are collagen, Restylane and Botox injections. These injections have their own applications and characteristics. Let?s focus our attention on Botox in this article.

The botulinum toxin has been known for centuries but it has been appreciated recently with the discovery of Botox. Botox was introduced thirty years ago. Earlier it was injected into the muscles surrounding the eyes of those patients who were suffering from crossed eyes.

Botox (Botulinum a toxin) injection is a method to recover your smooth and soft look. Botox injection is a FDA (Food and Drug Association) approved treatment. It is a purified protein, which is derived from bacterium clostridium botullinum, a toxin that can also cause food poisoning. Botox is a simple and speedy treatment. According to ASAPS (American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery) Botox is the fastest growing treatment for wrinkles.

Wrinkles originate with the over usage of facial muscles. Botox is injected into targeted muscle with a fine needle. Botox simply inactivates the muscles that produce wrinkles. Botox blocks the release of acetylcholine chemical, which transmits nerve signals to contract the muscle. So, it is a mechanism of muscle inactivation. This process weakens the muscles that produce frown lines. With Botox these lines are smoothed out and become almost invisible within a week.

Botox mainly targets crows feet, frown lines, laugh lines and forehead lines. It is injected in small doses. It is a fast therapy. Botox has been used for years in treating a variety of patients. Botox injection can also be used for migraine headaches. It also can decrease sweating on palms, under arms and at the hairline.

It is advised to the Botox-injected patients that they adhere to a few guidelines and implications before and after the treatment if they want optimal results. After the injection, ice can be applied to the targeted area that will reduce any swelling and discomfort. Injection procedure takes only about ten minutes and after that patients can return to their routine life without delay. Do not massage the treated area as this may cause bruising. Botox cannot be used during pregnancy, breastfeeding or on neurology patients.

If too much toxin is injected or if it is injected at a wrong place in the body, a droopy eyelid muscle may result that lasts for a week or more. Botox effects last for 3-6 months and it causes minimal pain. Definitely this product is good for those people who want to change their look and want a wrinkle free, smooth and clear appearance with out full blown surgery.

How to Pick a Dentist

Dentistry can be frightening for many people. A large number of people have sad or scary stories about the dentist. It just takes one bad dentist to start a person on a self destructive path of avoidance and tooth decay. Many of the dentally fearful ask the same question. What is the easiest and best way to choose a dentist? Following a simple process of selection is best. Making the decision structure simple is the key to get ting back in the dentists? chair and getting back on the road to a healthy and pain free smile. Using the following criteria while making dentistry choices will simplify your decisions.

A recommendation from your existing dentist, a friend, or family member can be useful.

You might ask your current dentist if he knows of any good dentists. Often, dentists maintain personal and professional relationships with other dentists around the country, and your dentist might be able to recommend a good dentist he knows of. Also friends and family members can provide very good insight into skills, office esthetics, and professional treatment. They can also help you to become more comfortable about the pain levels and sensitivity to certain environmental factors. Another good thing about a recommendation from friends or family is that you can assess the general cost structure before sitting in the chair.

What should you look for in a new dentist?

You can ask friends and neighbors for their recommendations. You should also look for a dentist who has a friendly staff that is easy to communicate with. Your dentist should be able to handle your particular dental history, but should also offer preventative dentistry, and do periodic examinations of your teeth and gums, along with at least yearly x-rays. They should encourage periodic appointments for routine teeth cleaning. The environment should be clean and stress free. The staff should always be friendly and receptive to your needs. If the staff or the dentist thinks you are being a baby when you tell them of your fears or apprehensions then simply leave and find another dentist.

Watch out for these warning signs.

Keep an eye out for flashy advertising, dentists who advocate cosmetic dentistry above preventative dentistry, and twilight sleep as the ideal technique of surgery. Also watch out for dentists that seem worried with diagnosing other illnesses besides those associated with teeth and gums. Dentists who practice holistic dentistry or those who depend on vitamin sales to boost their income are very bad and can actually set your dental health back. Be careful of a dentist that does not listen. If your dentist prefers extraction over saving a tooth then you might have a problem. Also, if you have a dentist who is offended if you get a second opinion then cut and run.

You should get acquainted first

Most dentists will happily schedule a consultation visit so you can meet the dentist and their staff, and decide then if this is the right dentist for your teeth and personal needs. If a dentist is not willing to schedule a visit like this, they probably are not the dentist for you. It is not very difficult to select a new dentist. You just need to understand what you looking for and not be afraid to ask some questions. If you understand some of the things to look for in a new dental practice, then your selection should be fairly easy. There are plenty of health related reasons to go to the dentist. You can make all of them available to you to use when you choose to follow a strict regimen of dentistry. You should go out and find a new dentist quickly and easily to preserve your beautiful smile.

Bad Teeth and Teeth Effects Bands

Many people mistakenly assume that they will have to wear braces or Invisalign if they want to correct problems like tooth gap. Braces and Invisalign are expensive solutions that are ideal for extremely crooked, bad teeth. A small gap between the teeth, however, is among the easiest and least expensive dental problems to correct. Gapped teeth can often be corrected in a very short period of time with the use of Teeth Effects Bands.

Bad Teeth and Teeth Effects Bands

Teeth Effects Bands are ingeniously simple devices that close dental gaps in days to weeks. We here at Teeth Gap are proud to offer this effective, affordable and user-friendly alternative. These bands can be ordered online without a prescription, and are easy to apply oneself. Putting on the bands is slightly challenging only during the first day or two of use. After that, it's a breeze.

The process of inserting a band is similar to flossing. Although you don't actually need a mirror for the simple act of flossing, looking into the mirror seems to help. The same is true for applying Teeth Effects Bands. The bands are always worn at night, during sleep. Wearing the bands during the day is optional, but clear bands are available for daytime use which are practically invisible, making this a very attractive option. Obviously, the more often you wear your bands, the more quickly your tooth gap will be corrected.

Please visit http://www.teethgap.com to close your gap simply by wearing a band around your teeth.

What To Do In Case A Tooth Gets Knocked Out

Traumatic injuries to teeth are more common than ever before and they are the most serious of dental conditions. Excluding motor-vehicle injuries, most data document a relatively consistent increase in injuries to teeth in recent years.

Advice to parents and team coaches used to be fairly straightforward and easy to remember. First, find the tooth and keep it moist while transporting the injured child to the dental office. Distilled water, contact lens solutions and milk were considered acceptable liquids for the purpose. Second, the predominant treatment philosophy followinan accident involving tooth loss called for replacing the tooth immediately or within 30 to 60 minutes if possible.

But after years of study, researchers have found that the long-term clinical rate of replanted avulsed teeth has been low, ranging from 4 to 50 percent. For this reason, attention is now being focused on keeping the soft tissue around the root healthy rather than on the speed of tooth replacement.

The best outcome in the case of a tooth being knocked out can be expected when the tooth is replaced within a few minutes of the traumatic event. According to Endodontics: Colleagues for Excellence, if teeth can be replaced within 15 minutes of being knocked out, the periodontal ligament (soft tissue surrounding root of tooth) will be restored within a few weeks in a very high percent of teeth. However, the pulp cannot be expected to survive; therefore root canal therapy is an important part of successful treatment. The sole exception to performing root canal treatment of teeth that have been replanted is in the case of a very immature tooth, where revascularization of the pulp is possible and desired. Ideally, root canal treatment should be performed on a tooth during the second week after replantation. Calcium hydroxide placed for up to 1 month prior to filling the root canal will aid in disinfection of the root canal system, and stabilization of the tooth with a functional, nonrigid splint for 2 to 3 weeks will help re-establish the periodontal ligaments.

If the avulsed (knocked out) tooth has been left dry for more than 1 hour, chances for restoration of the periodontal ligament are very poor. However, replantation of such a tooth may be worthwhile because the patient may benefit from several years of use.

Parents and coaches can take preventative measures to protect the children from facial injuries when playing sports. Approved mouth guards are the first step. But somehow, accidents will happen. Consequently, you should purchase the commercially available balanced salt solution (HBSS or ETPS) from the local drug stores and have one or two of the kits available at every game and practice session. Because a team will use only one or two of the kits in a season, the cost should not be prohibitive. Simply having one of these balanced salt solution kits available will provide a significant head start when dealing with an avulsed tooth. If commercially prepared balanced salt solutions kits are not available in your area, consider informing the various sports leagues, local schools and pharmacies that there is a market for these kits, and their promotion should be encouraged.

The Benefits of Invisalign Over Metal Braces

Teeth play a major role in your looks as everyone wants to wear and see a beautiful smile. Overlapped teeth or gaps in teeth can look unattractive and also blemish your overall appearance. To correct these problems, earlier there was only one solution - Braces. Braces work by putting force against the teeth, moving them slowly over time. The braces are made of metal, plastic or ceramic.

Although braces give a remarkable result in straightening teeth, they carry with them a stigma of looking ugly while treatment is undertaken, due to their visibility. A permanent mouth irritation is also a factor. There is another orthodontist course of treatment for straitening teeth without metal braces called Invisalign.

In 1997 Align Technology Company receive FDA clearance to market Invisalign as an orthodontist device. Invisalign is proposed to do the same job as braces in terms of regular tooth movement.

Invisalign braces move teeth through the proper placement of controlled force on the teeth. It not only controls the force that is applied on teeth but also controls timing of the force. At each step only specific teeth are allowed to move.

Invisalign is an invisible method of straightening teeth. Instead of wires and brackets, Invisalign uses a series of clear removable aligners. These aligners apply controlled pressure on your teeth. To design these aligners, the latest 3D technology is used which simulates the stages the teeth will go through. And this technology also allows you to view your own virtual treatment model when you start, so that you can see how your straight teeth will appear when your treatment is complete. Your orthodontist will review these 3D models and will approve the treatment plan.

A strong medical graded plastic is used to manufacture Invisalign aligners. Most of the time, these aligners are worn for about 2 weeks and after 2 weeks the old set of aligners are changed changed out for new ones. But there is no tightening or adjustment. Your teeth move through a step-by-step incremental procedure until they attain a desired or specific position.

Invisalign gives you maximum comfort and ease. And eating, brushing and flossing are no more a problem as aligners are removable. Therefore, you can relish your favorite food during the invisalign process.

Time taken for Invisalign treatment is just half that of traditional braces. Total treatment time is between 9-15 months and the approximate number of aligners worn during treatment is between 18 and 30, but from case to case the time and aligners may vary.

Invisalign also has some limitations. Firstly it is a cost effective treatment, yet is more than traditional braces. Treatment cost may vary according to the complexity of the case. Also, there are some cases such as overcrowding, over bites and under bites that Invisalign does not treat. Patients may feel discomfort for a few days with each new aligner. Also, Invisalign may temporarily affect the speech of some people.

Invisalign may have some limitations but it not only provides you with a beautiful smile but also gives comfort during the entire process.

Adverse Effects of Dental Implants

Dental implants are a remarkable advancement in dental research. They resemble natural teeth, are extremely sturdy, require the same maintenance as natural teeth and often can last a person?s lifetime. Dental implants are defined as ?permanent fixtures of titanium posts anchored to the jawbone and topped with individual replacement teeth or a bridge that screws or cements into the post.? Dental implants got their start in Sweden but the technology and materials that are being used in North America today have been successfully used in European countries for the past thirty years.

The success rate for both upper and lower implants is extremely high. For instance, lower implants have the highest success rate at 98 percent while for upper implants it is 91 percent. However there are some adverse effects that are associated with dental implants although the good news is that there is not that many. Let?s take a look at some of them.

Sometimes dental implant surgery fails because of bacterial contamination that is to be found at the site of the implants. If the area is not adequately cleaned beforehand then this is likely to occur. In order to decrease the chance of infection occurring following the surgery, patients are often prescribed one or a variety of prophylactic systemic antibiotics. The use of antibiotics in some individuals can cause its share of adverse effects ranging from diarrhea and vomiting to more serious allergic reactions that require immediate medical attention. With the use of antibiotics comes a concern about bacteria that is antibiotic-resistant. Tests are ongoing to determine to what extent antibiotics are necessary where dental implant surgery is concerned. This issue is somewhat of a controversial one as some patients seem to benefit from the use of antibiotics after surgery while others find it a hindrance to healing and ushers in a host of other adverse side effects. Some researchers believe that prophylactic antibiotics are very effective in reducing the incidence of dental implant failures while others are still not sure. New research into these health issues is being undertaken all of the time.

Some individuals are more likely to develop infections after surgery than are others because of a comprised immune system or a metabolic disease, such as those with diabetes. Other people prone to infection following surgery include people who are at risk of, or who have a past history of, heart related infections (or endocarditis) and those who have had radiotherapy either in the area of their head or neck. Patients with any of the above conditions are often administered preoperative antibiotics before the dental implant surgery is undertaken.

Other adverse effects of having dental implants placed in one?s mouth include the discomfort, bruising and swelling that often occurs afterwards. No two people have all of the same adverse effect postoperative but most people will experience a small extent of at least one of them. Sometimes the dental implants do not integrate to a patient?s mouth. This is another way of saying that the surgery can be a total flop. The failure of surgery can depend on a number of factors but the most common ones have to do with the type of implants that are used as well as the general health of the patient getting the surgery. As a general rule, the better health a person is in, the more likely that the surgery will be a success.

Stephanie Dilson is a Dental Surgeon and in her spare time runs an informational site on Dental Implants for all those interested in the process to find out valuable information on the cost, benefits, risks and features of this increasingly popular procedure. Xylitol and Dental Health

Xylitol is a natural, low-calorie sugar substitute that has been approved and used during the last few decades. Chemically, xylitol, is a pentitol (five carbon polyol) or as they are alternatively called a sugar alcohol. It is produced mainly from birch and beech wood and this is the reason that xylitol is alternatively called birch or wood sugar. Xylitol has the same organoleptic properties as sugar, meaning that it looks and tastes like sugar, however it has a number of advantages over sugar. One of the main advantages is that it inhibits the creation of dental caries.

The first evidence of xylitol's beneficial effects in preventing dental caries came from a study conducted in Finland that was published during the seventies. After the publication of that study, several clinical trials have been performed to evaluate the potential beneficial effects of xylitol in dental care. Today, we have enough evidence to say with confidence that the use of xylitol, and especially the substitution of sugar with xylitol has beneficial effects for dental health.

The mechanisms through which, xylitol exerts these beneficial effects are both direct and indirect. First of all xylitol is not fermentable by the bacteria that inhabit the oral cavity, in contrast with sugar. That means that by substituting sugar with xylitol the bacteria that are responsible for the creation of dental caries are deprived from one of their main sources of energy.

In addition to that, one of the main reasons that the consumption of sugars and carbohydrates cause dental problems is that they reduce the pH of the mouth causing enamel demineralization. The consumption of xylitol on the other hand has the exact opposite effect, it raises the pH of the mouth, protecting tooth enamel from demineralization. It should also be noted, that since the pH of the plaque is not reduced by the consumption of products sweetened with xylitol, remineralization is promoted.

Another important attribute of xylitol is that it has bacteriostatic effects. That means that xylitol inhibits the growth of bacteria like mutans streptococci, that are the main culprits for the creation of plaque and dental caries. This effect of xylitol is attributed to the fact that when these bacteria take up xylitol it is converted to xylitol-5-phosphate which results in the formation of intracellular vacuoles and the degradation of their cell membranes.

Finally, a few recent studies have demonstrated that the habitual consumption of xylitol products and to be more precise habitual chewing of xylitol gum by the mother can have a preventive effect for their children dental health. This is attributed to the fact that xylitol consumption by the mother can reduce the mother to child transmission of bacteria that are responsible for dental problems.

All the above make xylitol a very attractive sugar substitute. Especially since it's natural and it doesn't have any known side effects. The most common way of consuming xylitol is by chewing xylitol sweetened gum. However, any xylitol sweetened product will have almost the same beneficial effects.

Dimitris K. is a nutritionist with an interest in natural sweeteners and especially xylitol.

Had it with Snoring Ask the Dental Doc

Dear Dr. John,

My wife and even my dog have had it with my snoring, I even wake myself up, what can I do. Do those dental mouthpieces work?

James it sounds like you are a candidate for an evaluation by an ear, nose and throat doctor [ENT or sleep disorder clinic. They can evaluate the type of snoring you have. Let me first explain what causes snoring. When you breathe, air causes the tissues of the soft palate, throat, uvula, tonsils or adenoids to vibrate creating the fluttering noises of snoring. The vibrations occur because excessive fatty tissues and overly relaxed muscles obstruct the airway. The most common tissues involved are the soft palate and the uvula. When the muscles in the soft palate relax, an upward fold occurs causing the uvula to vibrate with each breath of air. Sometimes the fold is so severe that it seals the back of the throat preventing the passage of any air to the lungs. This is called, obstructed sleep apnea [OSA. Sleep apnea can be a terribly disabling condition. Sleep apnea can be responsible for myriad of health problem. Sleep apnea is a common disorder in which breathing stops during sleep for 10 seconds or more, sometimes more than 300 times a night. Sleep apnea is common, and affects more than twelve million Americans, according to the National Institutes of Health. Risk factors may include but not be limited to being male, overweight, and over the age of forty, but sleep apnea can strike anyone at any age. It has been documented that this condition is causative agent responsible for, headaches, high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, weight gain, poor job performance, chronic fatigue, memory problems, mood swings and a substantial increase in the risk of being involved in a motor vehicle accident

Mouthpiece devices have been somewhat effective for many snorers, including those suffering from mild or moderate obstructive sleep apnea. Generally they are plastic devices worn in the mouth during sleep to prevent the soft throat tissues from collapsing and obstructing the airway. Their aim is accomplish this by bringing your lower jaw forward and/or by lifting your soft palate. Some devices also stop the tongue from falling back over your windpipe. Most dentists should be able to fit you with such an appliance. I would suggest you try this less costly and invasive appliance before more invasive procedures.

There are surgical procedures available to remove the uvula and stiffen the soft palate. The purpose of these surgeries is to remove the excess tissues that vibrate when you inhale. The success rates of these surgical procedures seem to fall in the forty to fifty percent range and are reported to be very painful. There is a new procedure that looks very promising. It is called the Pillar Procedure. It?s relatively simple to perform, can be done with local anesthesia and in one short office visit. The doctor carefully inserts three plastic implants into your soft plate. These implants are 18mm long by 2mm in diameter and are made of medical grade polyethylene plastic. After the implants are placed, fibrous tissue grows between the implants stiffening the tissue of the soft palate. The actual procedure only takes about fifteen minutes and costs in the range of $1200-$1600. Although the clinical trials look promising with a seventy-five percent success rate, it is a relatively new procedure.

Root Canal Disinfectants Antibiotics Prove Inadequate to Eradicate Bacteria

The bacteria dentists use to determine Whether treatment of a root canal infection has been successful, namely the absence of discomfort and pain; x-ray evidence that abscessed areas, granulomas and cysts have completely filled in with new bone; and trust that the medicaments used in producing these results completely eradicated bacteria, all proved inadequate when such teeth were subjected to further testing by Dr. Price and his group.

Testing for the presence of bacteria in root canal, after the use of disinfectants which appeared to have controlled the infections, proved that the organisms had not been eradicated.

Dr. Price, in making cultures after the use of over 100 different medicaments, including different strengths of each, found only eight which had negative responses after 24 hours, and only two after 48 hours of incubation; longer periods were found to be ineffective as medicaments lost their disinfecting power.

The two most efficient medicaments proved to be objectionable - silver nitrate because it turned teeth black and formalin because it was very irritating and painful to patients and destructive to surrounding tissues.

Though culturing to determine whether bacteria had been killed was formerly taught and practiced, I know of no dentists using such a testing procedure today.

Dr. Price in another series of tests took extracted infected teeth and treated them (much easier to do aseptically outside of the mouth) and found when these teeth were sectioned their dentin and cementum were still infected.

In still another investigation, Dr. Price made biopsy sections at and below the gum line and found bacteria present not only in the root of the teeth and their protective cementum but also in the first millimeter or two of adjacent bone. The importance of this factor in causing cavitations in bone after extractions will be discussed in a later chapter.

Dr. Price noted future developments might bring forth medicaments which are more successful. You will all be thinking that antibiotics are certainly the answer. However, antibiotics have not proven able to effectively penetrate the dentin tubules, cementum and adjacent bone sufficiently to eradicate these bacteria.

Testing of new medicaments, and current efforts such as new laser treatment methods, are of course necessary and were anticipated by Dr. Price.

All of these root canal side-effect problems should not deter the profession from continuing to explore new methods of how to save teeth. While we cannot learn how to save teeth by extracting them, Dr. Price fortunately has shown us ways to test procedures to prove whether infection has been eradicated in teeth we think we have saved.

Constipation Bad Breath

Bad breath is caused by anaerobic bacteria that live in the back of the tongue and other areas of the mouth not exposed to oxygen. Every person has over 170 different types of these anaerobic bacteria living in their mouths. Yet even so there are many people who go through life without bad breath even when they do little more than ordinary mouth care.

Therefore, bad breath must be caused by something more than just the presence of bacteria in the mouth.

Normally, the bacteria present in our mouth are responsible for the break down of proteins found in our diet, saliva, mucous and phlegm. During the process, they release volatile sulfur compounds as waste products. These volatile sulfur compounds are highly odorous but the smell is not noticeable in individuals without bad breath. It is only when under certain conditions that the bacteria break down proteins at a much higher rate and excrete volatile sulfur compounds that the odor becomes highly noticeable and offensive.

But in addition to bacteria in the mouth, bad breath may also be a symptom of a problem in the person?s bowels. Constipation bad breath, for instance, occurs when there is irregularity in the person?s digestive system, causing the stool to become hard and extremely difficult to eliminate. While the condition itself ? constipation ? is not considered a cause of bad breath, constipation bad breath can be an indirect signal that there is an imbalance in the body processes which must be corrected.

Constipation bad breath could be due to several causes from dietary to hormonal or be even a side effect of medications and anatomical. Incidentally, normal bad breath (that is, bad breath not caused by digestive problems) may also be due to a side effect of drugs you are taking, which could dry up the mouth, causing bad breath.

Treating constipation bad breath consists in treating the constipation itself. If the problem is dietary in nature, then changing your dietary habits, laxatives, and fiber therapy could help treat the constipation and in the process the symptom of constipation bad breath. Enemas and surgery though rare may also be used to treat acute cases of constipation.

In addition, nearly any form of bad breath is treatable just by improving oral hygiene. In fact, it is safe to say that almost all cases of bad breath have something to do with a lack of proper oral hygiene on the part of the person. You may brush your teeth every after meal but if you are not doing it properly, then dental tartar and food debris could still collect in your mouth, proving as breeding ground for bacteria to proliferate. Therefore, it is important that you also make some changes in your oral hygiene practices if you want to get rid of constipation bad breath.

Acne 101

One of the most trying periods in a teener?s life is the stage when raging hormones give rise to ?mountainous ranges? on the face. ? These mounds are what dermatologists call acne. But although, acne problems often begin in the adolescence stage, the condition can persist until adulthood. Acne is characterized by the inflammation in the sebaceous glands of the skin. The condition can be caused by a whole lot of things, from heredity to hygiene issues.

Causes of Acne problems

Heredity
While it is still not clear what gene plays a role in causing acne, studies have shown family history of acne problems. If, for instance, your parents suffer from acne problems whether during adolescent stages or adulthood, then you will most likely suffer from the same fate.

Hormones
The body?s natural hormones often go on the overdrive during adolescence and other stages where the body is changing its physiological make-up such as during pregnancy. This causes the oil glands to over-function, producing too much oil on the skin.

Hygiene
Bacteria on the skin can also cause infections that may eventually lead to skin swellings. Acne can also occur when oil, dirt and dead skin cells clog the pores. While it is a good idea to wash your face everyday with a mild anti-bacterial soap, too much washing can also cause acne. When people over-wash, their skins may dry up and get irritated. Dryness, in turn, will cause the oil glands to produce more oil than what is usually released, thus, setting the stage for acne problem.

Make-up
Make-up can clog the pores especially when left unwashed after a day?s work. Coupled with oil and dirt, make-up can eventually lead to acne problems.

Diet
Although there are really no specific foods that cause acne per se, the effects that some foods have on the body can eventually lead to acne. Chocolates and nuts, for example, do not directly cause acne but these food items can increase the production of oil by the oil glands, thus aiding in the beginnings of acne. The same is true with greasy foods such as pizza, potato chips, French frieds and other food items that are deep fried. For people who already have oily skin, it is best to avoid oily and greasy foods so as not to exacerbate their predisposition to acne.

Treating acne
For some, acne will eventually disappear when the body regains its former balance during adulthood but for others, who have family histories of acne, the battle can still ensue even after the adolescence period, even well into adulthood.

Treatment of acne takes many forms. Mild acne, for instance, can be simply treated with the use of lotions and topical medicines, which are applied on affected areas. Moderate to severe acne, on the other hand, are often treated not only with topical medicines but also surgical procedures.

Sometimes, it is not even acne that most concerns dermatologists but the scars that the acne will leave behind after the treatment. This is why, may dermatologists advice that people have their acne treated when it is still starting. Treating acne that is already on its terminal stage can be very difficult and traumatic for the skin. Acne that are left untreated for so long can leave scars that cannot be easily removed.

Mesotherapy Before And After

Most Mesotherapy practitioners claim remarkable results in treating cellulite, localized fat deposits, and wrinkles. There are numerous patient testimonials of successful treatment, and ?Before and After? photographs on Mesotherapy clinic websites. For cellulite, results may be seen in as little as four weeks, and by the time treatment is completed, patients may have lost between two to four inches from the body area being treated. Similarly, for localized fat loss such as in love handles and other problem areas, approximately ten treatments can result in the loss of two to six inches. However, there is wide variation in how soon results may be seen, depending on which body area is being treated. There may also be considerable variation between people who are having the same body area treated. For cellulite and mesolifts, or facelifts with mesotherapy, patients are typically advised to return for maintenance treatment every six months to a year after the initial treatment is completed.

The majority of mesotherapists point out that fat reduction results can only be maintained through exercise and a healthy diet. This is one reason Mesotherapy is considered controversial. Mesotherapy treatments typically extend over two to six months, a length of time that is adequate for results from healthy lifestyle changes to become visible. It has not been scientifically proven whether weight loss is attributable to these healthy lifestyle changes, such as increased exercise and a balanced diet, or to Mesotherapy itself.

Results with Mesotherapy are gradual, as small areas are targeted over a period of time to eventually have a cumulative effect. On the other hand, results with plastic surgery such as liposuction are immediately visible, and may be quite dramatic. For this reason, ?Before and After? photos of people who have undergone Mesotherapy may have more subtle differences between them than one would expect to see with plastic surgery.

Malignant Mesothelioma

Malignant mesothelioma is a rare cancer in which malignant or cancerous cells form in the thin layers of tissue lining the human chest, heart or abdomen. When the cancer is in the chest, it affects the pleura or tissue lining the lungs and is called malignant pleural mesothelioma. This is the most common type of mesothelioma. In the abdomen, a cancer of the peritoneum or tissue lining the abdominal cavity and covering various organs is called malignant peritoneal mesothelioma. The least common form of mesothelioma affects the pericardium, or outer lining of the heart. The term mesothelioma literally means a growth of the mesothelium, a layer of tissue from which the pleura, peritoneum and pericardium all develop.

The majority of malignant mesotheliomas occur in people who have been exposed to asbestos, either directly or via people they live with. Avoiding exposure to asbestos can largely prevent malignant mesotheliomas. Depending on the location of the cancer, someone with malignant mesothelioma may have one or more of the following symptoms: breathlessness, pain under the rib cage or in the abdomen, an abdominal lump or swelling, and unexplained weight loss.

If a detailed medical history and physical exam suggests malignant mesothelioma as a possible diagnosis, a variety of diagnostic tests may be performed, including blood tests, x-rays, MRIs, CT scans and biopsies. Malignant mesotheliomas are graded upon the extent they have spread. A stage I, or localized, malignant mesothelioma is one that has not spread beyond the area it originated in. Stage II, III and IV malignant mesotheliomas are advanced, and may have spread to lymph nodes or to surrounding or distant organs and tissues. Depending on the stage, a treatment plan may include surgery, radiation therapy or chemotherapy. Some cancer treatment centers are involved in clinical trials using biotherapy and immunotherapy.

The Healing Arts: A Firetender's Lesson Part Three Holding A Sacred Trust

Nobody knows how far back the Chips' lineage goes. It's fair to surmise that it went way back, perhaps thousands of unbroken years along with the Sioux. The records start in the early 1800s with two boys from different families who were orphaned at an early age. They were adopted by a Grandmother, who raised them as brothers. One's name was Woptura (Wo-p-tuch-ha). The other one's name was Curly, who, as he got older became known as Crazy Horse.

Woptura was recognized early on as carrying the Medicine. Some say he is one of the Immortals. It was he who made the medicine bundle that Crazy Horse wore in his hair that kept him impervious to bullets in war. (Crazy Horse did have his jaw shot through by the jealous husband of a lover, but that was the only such wound he suffered in his time, and never in war.)

The day that Crazy Horse was lured into a nearby fort and held captive, family legend has it that Woptura rode behind him, furiously trying to catch him to give him back the bundle upon which he had been making repairs. He was too late. Crazy Horse, unprotected for perhaps the first time in many years, had been killed.

Woptura lived in very turbulent times. Around the turn of the century, all the Sioux children were taken from their families and put into Missionary Schools. Speaking the Native languages was forbidden, and all practicing of the medicine ways, songs, ceremonies, and rituals was banned at the risk of heavy punishment by the government.

An old man by now, Woptura went underground and kept the medicine ways alive. John Fire Lame Deer states that all Lakota Medicine people today trace their lineage back to Woptura. It was Woptura, most believe, who originated the Yuwipi ceremony.

Woptura had a son who inherited his Medicine. He was named Charles Horn Chips. Chips was the best the government agents could do when the family tried to explain that woptura was the thin, fine particulate film that lies on the very top of pond water. Others described it as the very fine powder from ground buffalo horn. Even today, some members of the family spell their name Chipps to distinguish themselves from the government designation.

Charles Horn Chips had a son named Ellis. Ellis did not inherit the powers yet he was a tremendously accomplished Singer who went on to create the Sioux National Anthem. Ellis, living on the Pine Ridge Reservation, married a woman named Victoria from the Rosebud Reservation, about 75 miles East, and they had three sons.

When it was found that the youngest, Godfrey, would talk to the Spirits during Yuwipi Ceremonies (as offered by Horn Chips), Ellis obtained government permission to remove him from Grammar School and take on the full-time duty of training him in the Medicine ways. To the best of my knowledge, Godfrey was the last Medicine Man to have been granted that privilege. The edict, which I saw, stated that if father and son, or Godfrey alone were found in town on a school day, they would both be jailed. Ellis brought his son from Medicine Man to Medicine Man for his trainings, while also teaching him all that he himself had learned while assisting his Father.

It was quite a while before I became familiar with this history. For the longest time, all I knew was that this family, whom I was quickly learning to love, carried something very powerful and special when their intent was focused on the good of others, and it was in their blood.

I had been brought to some people to be shown an example of Spirit in action. They allowed me to learn and participate with them in the sacred ceremony and ritual of their people. They were extremely controversial amongst their people. Ellis had been told by Spirit in the 1980's that the Cannunpa was for everyone. They were the only Traditionals at the time who welcomed seekers of all colors and orientations into what had once been almost exclusive territory to people with Native American blood. By way of explanation, Charles offered, There's a lot of Indian spirits around, and not enough indian bodies to come back to.

Not once was I told what or how to believe. I was always directed to continue to cultivate my own relationship with Spirit, to build my own medicine, to find how Spirit spoke to me so that I could then help others. If I ran into their Lakota spirits in the process, well then, it wasn't for me to swallow what I was told about them, it was my challenge to build a relationship with what was really there.

And this was why, when I was asked about Sundance, even at that early juncture in my relationship with the Chips, I knew it wasn't Godfrey's request.

Next: A brutal reality.
