Organic Essential Oils Sourced Directly from Nature's Lap

Essential oils are the pure essence of a plant or herb. However, it is difficult to rule out the presence of pesticides in the so-called pure essential oil, particularly in the age where pesticides form an important constituent of farming. A conclusion thus follows that the essential oil derived from such raw materials may not be as effective for ones purpose; resulting into side effects at times. The craze for organic essential oils springs from the concern for ones safety while using essential oils.

Organic essential oils are manufactured from plants and herbs that have been grown without pesticides. Organic farming coexists with the natural systems rather than dominating them. In the process, the farmer is able to sustain and build soil fertility, reduces pollution and overall becomes a crusader to protect environment.

Pesticides are not the only component that the organic essential oil must be rid of. The farmers must take steps to preserve the soil quality of the land. This will result into enzyme-rich and therapeutically viable raw materials. Using these techniques ensures that the organic essential oil is alive and active.

If compared to the essential oils derived from non-organic elements, one will find that the organic essential oils outscore them. The quality of organic essential oils taken as a whole, curative benefits and aroma are always superior to the non-organic oils.

Thanks to the several certifying agencies, buyers can escape the unscrupulous activities that are going on in this industry. One can easily be duped into taking a non-organic essential oil in place of the organic essential oil. ECOCERT International certified organic essential oils are considered of a good quality through out the world. Soil Association in the UK certifies organically manufactured essential oils.

However, certification of a few oils is difficult. An example of this is the Boswellia tree resin, which is the raw material for deriving frankincense essential oil. It is difficult to certify the essential oil derived from this because it is grown only in wild conditions. In such cases, if the manufacturer is able to source raw material from the actual location, it will be deemed to be grown without pesticides or insecticides.

When shopping for organic essential oils, the buyer must look for terms such as 100% natural or 100% biodegradable. Only the manufacturers of organic essential oils can use the terms or phrases. Another thing to look for when shopping for organic essential oils is its ingredients. If the list of ingredients reveals fragrance oils, artificial colors or synthetics, it is not organic essential oil.

Organic essential oils are available in sizes of 5ml, 10ml and 15ml. Expensive oils come in sizes of 2ml and 1 dram. It is very important to store essential oils in good conditions. Rather than using clear glass bottles, it will be advisable to use dark amber or cobalt blue bottles. These bottles do not allow sunlight to pass through and thus prevent deterioration of organic essential oils. To prevent temperature fluctuations and sunlight to contaminate the oils, the user can purchase or get special wooden boxes constructed to store the essential oils.

Cost of organic oils is more. This is because the cost of producing via organic means is more. However, an essential oil with little or no therapeutic value (for which the buyer chiefly purchases the oil) is of no use. All good things come at a price. The same applies to organic essential oils too. Buyers thus must not shy away from paying a small premium to get the pure essential oils.

Lasting Solution Acne 3 Main Factors Stopping You From Your Acne Free Life

The Problem: Symptoms are treated but not the cause of the symptom. An example of this is found in the common use of cream and drugs (Accutane) to treat acne. Furthermore, some acne medication has undesirable side effects and it can be different for each person. For example: A person who suffers from acne, who has never had dandruff problems before but after using Accutane for a few months begin to experience constant dandruff. This happened to me. However, it is quite common to see dandruff accompanied by acne.

Don?t get me wrong, these acne medications do work, but only as long as it can treat the acne faster than your body is producing the acne. If you stopped using these product to treat acne or your acne becomes worse, your acne will re-appear again, sometimes at a worsen state.

So what and where is the cause of your acne? The cause of your acne lies within your body system. It is highly influenced by these three factors; your hormone imbalance, high toxic build up and your genetic tendencies. These undesirable factors have come about from the choices you have made in life. These choices include your diet, daily activities, thoughts, emotions and sleeping pattern.

Although you can?t do much about your genetic tendencies, you have the power to balance your hormone and flush out the toxic that has built up in your system. A quick way to begin is to incorporate daily exercise, and eat food that nourishes your vital organs and less food that assist in building up toxic waste. Also make sure that you sleep at the right time, preferably at least before midnight, to allow your vital organs to rest and do their job.

Research has shown that your liver and gall?s detoxification process works best during deep sleep state, between 11pm to 3am. In addition, lack of sleep and waking up too early damages your liver. Damaged liver will hamper your body?s ability to flush out the toxic waste in your system. If you keep this up, acne will be the least of your only problems. Notice that when you begin to initially increase your body?s detoxification capability, you may experience worse acne that is temporary.

By the way, be certain about the pain acne have caused you and the pleasure it has robbed you off in your life. Then go out and seek the right information and a winning game plan to fight acne then take action towards your acne free life. One more thing, watch your thoughts as they produce emotions. Negative emotions and thoughts will lower your immune system thus affecting your health and acne. Cheer up! You are on the right track, after all you have been through, what don?t kill you will only make you stronger.

God's Healing Power Is Available To You By Faith

Good health and healing is available to us by faith in Jesus. It is God?s promise to us when we become Christians. Surely he took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows, yet we considered him stricken by God, smitten by Him and afflicted. But He was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him and by his wounds we are healed.Isaiah 53:4-5 NIV

God created us to have eternal life, which includes health, in the beginning but because of what happened when Adam and Eve sinned against God, our bodies and soul were given over to death and decay. ?The man now has become like one of us, knowing good and evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat and live forever.? Genesis 3:22

God has to follow the natural law that He has placed on this earth. Just as trees and flowers and even rocks are subject to decay, our bodies are naturally given over to decay until we die and we become ashes. But when we receive new life in Jesus, we are renewed inside and out. ?Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!? 2 Corinthians 5:17 NIV

However, we still live on the earth and our bodies are still subject to the world?s decay. Just as we need to guard our hearts against sin, we need to guard our bodies against that physical decay.

That?s why it is so important to eat right and take care of our bodies. It?s not wisdom to allow things in our body that are not healthy, just as we wouldn?t allow things in our minds that are not healthy. Moderation is the key.

Our bodies are the temple of the Holy Spirit. That?s the same Spirit that raised Jesus Christ from the dead. If it is powerful enough to raise the dead; it is certainly powerful enough to heal you and keep you healthy.

If you haven?t received Jesus in your heart as your Savior, please consider it. Maybe you have been considering it but you are putting it off. It doesn't matter what you've done or who you are, God forgives a repentant heart. Don?t put it off any longer;the blessing and healing of God awaits you once you receive His love into your heart.

If you need healing, receive it the same way you received your salvation-by faith! Look up scriptures on healing and declare them over yourself. In most situations, you will not see a ?miraculous? healing that occurs instantaneously. It happens, but rarely. God works according to the natural laws that He set in place. He also created our bodies to heal naturally. Our faith and our actions work together to bring healing to our bodies. Even the medical community has given credit to the power of prayer to heal. Think positively about your health situation in your mind and express it through your words by declaring God?s word of healing over yourself.

As you declare God's word of healing over your life, don't turn around and say that you are sick. You are are just stomping all over the seed of your faith and you will not receive your harvest of healing. But when he asks, he must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That man should not think he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a doubleminded man, unstable in all he does.James 3:6-8 NIV

If you struggle with this idea of healing, seek God about it for yourself. We all have the ability to hear from God for ourselves. Just make sure that what you hear in your heart lines up with the word of God. ?But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere.? James 3:17 NIV God is always positive, never condemns or discourages. God always rewards those who seek Him and He gives wisdom to those who ask for it, ?If any of you lack wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.? James 1:5-6 NIV.

First of all, the most irritating and unsightly thing about acne is the pus and impurities that are trapped in the pore. The juice from a raw (green) papaya will help reduce swelling immediately, and prevent the formation of pus. Using the juice, seed, and skin on your face will remove whiteheads and leave your skin clear and beautiful.

Persistent pimples and acne can be cleared with garlic juice and water. Take about 3 or 4 pods of raw garlic, skinned and finely chopped, and soak it in milk for half an hour to remove the unpleasant smell. Then rub the mixture on your acne, and it will disappear.

Ask a Dentist About Your Neck and Shoulder Pain

If your physician can?t pinpoint the cause of your neck and shoulder pain, perhaps the solution is in the hands of your dentist. It is reported that the majority of North Americans put up with headaches, migraines, jaw pain, neck and shoulder pain as a result of jaw joint dysfunction, or a bad bite. Physicians therefore may not have the answers, but a neuromuscular dentist most likely will. Here?s why, according LVI Global, the world-renowned institute for advanced dental studies:

A bad bite (malocclusion) may in turn change the jaw-to-skull relationship causing the jaw to twist into a strained position. Involved this the muscles of biting, chewing, talking, head posture and breathing are the bones of the neck. If the shoulder, back and neck muscles are forced to compensate for the tight, sore and contracted muscles of the jaw, it will cause the shoulder pain you may have been experiencing. Neuromuscular dentists can relieve the strain on the jaw and surrounding muscles by correcting the bite.

Neuromuscular dentistry not only benefits sore muscles, but also can help to relieve migraines and headaches brought on by TMJ/TMD.

If You Enjoy Yapping You'll Appreciate Good Dental Care.

Taking care of your teeth, gums, and the rest of your mouth, including the repair or replacement of defective teeth is what defines dental care. It?s common to see a person suffering from dental diseases due to carelessness and lack of knowledge of good oral hygiene.

It is said that healthy gums and teeth are extremely important to keep your entire body system healthy and sound. Lack of proper care and a regular check up with your dentist may lead to several diseases like tooth decay, gingivitis, dental plaque, periodontal disease, mouth odor, etc..

Symptoms and prevention of tooth decay, gingivitis and periodontal disease:

1. Tooth Decay: The main cause of tooth decay is an acid base chemistry or an excess amount of acid. This is associated with sugar bugs, those who regularly eat sweet without brushing right after. Symptoms: First, a white spot appears on the tooth, which will lead to an early cavity if not dealt with. Cavities will begin with a light brown color on the tooth, and gradually become darker. Prevention:
? Be sure to brush twice daily, morning and before bedtime as well as after every meal.
? Floss daily (at least once), I know it's a chore but it's your smile we're talking about here. (:--)
? Consult a dentist for a regular cleaning and examination. Try to follow their recommendations.
? Make sure retainers, dentures and other appliances are clean and don't skip their recommended cleaning procedures.

2. Gingivitis & Periodontal Disease: Gingivitis is inflammation of the gums, whereas periodontal disease is the advanced stage of gum disease, which attacks the gums, bone and around the teeth. Symptoms: swollen gums, mouth sores, bright red appearance of gums and bleeding gums. Prevention:
? Brush your teeth twice daily.
? Gently floss the teeth once a day.
? Consult your dentist for further instructions.

Dental products to avoid:

There are many dental care products to avoid; these include strong antiseptic mouthwashes, bleaching agents, hydrogen peroxide, fluoride toothpastes, alcohol breath fresheners and other oral hygiene products. On the plus side they kill bacteria but also promote dental plaque which will make things worse in the end.

Products for dental care are: antioxidant tooth powder and probiotic mouthwash. Consult your dentist for the best products for your situation.

Children are more susceptible to dental problems. They are prone to eating chocolates, candies and sweets and thus get easily affected and suffer from tooth decay and other problems. So it is important for parents to know the basics of good dental care and guide your children accordingly.

These few simple steps can keep you and your family from severe pain, health hazards and will help us to keep smiling all through out the day.

Dental Teeth Whitening: Should You Consider It?

Dental teeth whitening is not just a recent trend for the modern multitude, but rather a virtual necessity for every person seeking to gain the self-confidence and that much envied dream SMILE! And cosmetic dentistry has helped individuals gain just that. A smile is what can win the heart of the person or command the attention of a crowd, yet sadly all too many people try to hide their smile for fear of displaying yellowed or stained teeth. With modern dental teeth whitening options, such public fears are no longer necessary.

First let's take a brief look at the common causes for the discoloring of human teeth. Despite the fact that healthy teeth are very hard, the enamel consists of microscopic pores that lose their color over time ? it's a natural result of aging. There are other common causes of discolored teeth too, such as smoking, chewing tobacco or even from consumables that we eat and drink. What bleaching does (the most popular form of dental teeth whitening) is remove these stains from the enamel of a person's teeth, thus bringing forth the gleaming white again.

There is some great (and possibly unexpected) news for people seeking dental teeth whitening: cosmetic dentistry is not always as expensive as people think, and sometimes they are even covered by insurance! So with that said, let's take a more detailed look at the various teeth whitening procedures available to you.

One of the most convenient techniques of dental teeth whitening involves the at-home tray teeth whitening. This tray-based tooth bleaching technique utilizes a plastic tray filled with a bleaching gel that is spread over a person's teeth. It is required to wear the tray for a substantial amount of time each day for a few weeks while the gradual effects of the tooth whitening process takes place.

Another technique for teeth whitening is that of the teeth whitening strips. These teeth whitening strip products offer an up-to-the-minute and pioneering way to perform teeth bleaching treatments. This type of over-the-counter whitening system offers similar results as tray-based bleaching without the need to use those sometimes annoying whitening trays. Strips offer a portable way to obtain teeth whitening without much fuss and can be performed even by individuals caught up in busy and chaotic schedules.

The more elaborate and effective techniques of dental teeth whitening are generally carried out by a professional dentist at their office. While more expensive, whitening via a professional dentist is much more quick and potent, thus leading to a significantly faster and brighter smile. So although professional whitening is significantly more expensive, it may be ideal for individuals requiring urgent teeth whitening results.

Appointment times of a dentist usually range from two to three hours, consisting of fully professional attention and bleaching compound coupled with a laser treatment. This method is so effective that you'll see spectacular results the same day as the bleaching treatment, and the results are very prominent within the full course of the treatment.

The Dental InfectionsRoot Canal Infections Bacteria and Other Microorganisms Are Involved

This article is part of Dr. George Meinig's, DDS, FACD, research information of the extensive and investigative research of Dr. Weston Price's,DDS,FACD, research work.

Although any one of these organisms could be causative of oral infections people suffer, they found that over 90 percent of the time the bacteria involved were of the streptococcus species.

It will surprise you to learn that when a dentist cuts only the enamel of a tooth, no pain is involved unless the tooth becomes overheated by a fast moving drill or diamond stone. Once the dentin just under the enamel is contacted, however, most people experience discomfort. While it was previously believed there are no nerve fibers in dentin, electron-microscope studies of the dentin tubules now show they do contain very fine nerve fibers.

The dentin isn't as hard as enamel because it is composed of tiny hollow tubules, so small they can be seen only through a microscope. THESE DENTIN TUBULES have a number of characteristics and functions which are very important to our understanding the process of tooth infection.

The tubules contain a FLUID, and this FLUID carries nutrients and other matter needed to keep teeth Healthy.

To accomplish its tasks, the fluid movement in the dentin flows through all of the dentin to, and even through, the enamel; the hard enamel substance is porous enough to permit such movement.

It is this fluid which nourishes all parts of teeth and is responsible for sustaining their life.

WHEN A PERSON EATS SUGAR, the fluid flow in the dentin tubules from the pulp outward is actually reversed. By now many of scientists have documented this interesting phenomenon.

In recent years, Dr. Ralph R. Steinman, Professor Emeritus from the Loma Linda University Dental School, found in studies of rats that the flow reversed when injected glucose (sugar) under the skin of their abdomens.

He also introduced sugar directly into their stomachs through the use of a stomach tube and has the same result. This showed that, contrary to popular belief, sugar doesn't have to touch teeth at all for its presence to result in a severe amount of tooth deday.

These investigations clearly demonstrate that the reversal of fluid flow in the dentin tubules could be created by DETRIMENTAL NUTRITIONAL CHANGES which in turn, would be responsible for servere systemic changes to the bodies of humans and animals.

My Teeth are Now Zoom! Whitened

Let me tell you about my Zoom Whitening experience. For those of you who are unaware about teeth whitening products, the Zoom product is professional use only. Works rather quickly as opposed to the every night crest whitestrips. But it does cost more.

I went to the dentist?s office and was setup with the dental assistant. She went over my teeth to remove and plaque or residue to have a clean tooth surface to apply the zoom gel. They put something on my gums to protect them from the gel. It felt like rubber, but it was a gel that was in a tube. They had an appliance to hold my mouth open so I didn?t have to hold a terror scream position the entire time I was there.

Cotton ball rolls were used to hold my lips off my teeth. They basically want your teeth exposed, only your teeth, and to just let them hang there in the air while they apply the gel. She painted on the gel, which is a hydrogen peroxide gel. Then they used a Zoom light to enhance the whitening. It looked like a black light. She told me that it made the peroxide act quicker and faster, and after researching, I found that using the light helps by over 33%.

They did my six front teeth, top and bottom, 12 total. First, they applied the gel, did the zoom lamp, and then they wiped off the gel, and applied more gel. They did this 3 times to the same set of teeth. So, overall, it took about an hour and a half before I was ready to go. I got to catnap in between whitening.

What happened after I left?

The zoom whitening continued to whiten my teeth for 12-18 hours after the procedure. So, I couldn?t drink any heavy staining drinks like coffee, cokes, or tea. But wait, I?ll miss my caffeine rush. You might need a caffeine pill or take an Excedrin migraine pill. I think they have caffeine.

It was uncomfortable to have my mouth propped open for so long, and the chemical gets into the enamel, dentin or pores of the teeth so they were sensitive to everything. But, about 20 hours later, I was good as new. The whitening had taken effect and my teeth were no longer sensitive. I heard some people it takes up to 3 days to get back to normal, but I was fine.

I wanted to share my experience with you if you were thinking about the zoom whitening in office treatment. They also had a home treatment you could use, but I wanted to take advantage of the 33% more whitening with that zoom lamp they used. I can tell they are whiter. Suppose to get up to 8 shades whiter. I don?t know how much I got, but it does look better.

Cost? Mine was about $250 total. I?m sure it varies depending on where you go.

Cosmetic Dentistry What You Need To Know In Advance

Cosmetic dentistry cost is high. This type of dentistry is for things that are not necessary for the health and well being of your teeth. This type of dentistry is often not covered, or may only be partially covered, by your dental insurance plan. Therefore, you should weigh the question of whether this type of density work is worth the cost that it is being offered to you at. In some cases, cosmetic dentistry cost can be well worth the money.

When It Matters

If you have a specific condition or you have something that really does bother you, go in and talk to your dentist about it. Talk to them about what the solutions for your problem are. And, tell them about your concern for cosmetic dentistry costs. Often times, if there is something that can be done to lower the costs, your dentist is likely to tell you that. Additionally, you should find out what needs done so that you can get second opinions on the cost of it. Often time doctors will offer different prices for your needs.

There are many times when cosmetic dentistry costs are well worth the investment. For example, when you have something that is causing you great discomfort emotionally, there is a real need to have it done. While you health may not be effected by it, your self esteem likely is. Not only does having the dentistry done improve your overall look, but it also allows you to find help in the way of improving your out look on life. When this happens, it is quite beneficial in the long run to have the surgery done.

When you are considering cosmetic dentistry costs, there may be other options for you. While you dental insurance may not cover the full price of the procedure, they may cover part of it. Additionally, you may be able to secure funding for the procedure through a payment plan that your doctor will provide for you. Talk to them about your situation and more than likely they will help you to work something out.

Finally, when trying to determine what the cost will be, there is virtually now way to tell you this until you speak with your doctor and determine just what the costs are likely to be. That is because each person's needs are going to be different. If you have to be put under for the procedure, this will cost more. If you want just a heavy duty cleaning, depending on the extent with which this has to be done will determine what the costs will be. Unfortunately, you will have to work with your doctor to find out what your needs truly are. While this may be frustrating, it is the best way to get an individual opinion of your needs as well.

Home Remedies For Toothache

Just about the only thing that is worse than having a toothache is having to go to the dentist so that he can fix it! While you might try to ignore a toothache and hope it goes away you really need to have it checked out as most toothaches are due to tooth or jaw problems like dental cavity, cracked tooth, exposed tooth root, gum disease, jaw point diseases or spasm of the muscles used for chewing.

The severity of a toothache can range from chronic, mild to sharp, and excruciating. The pain may worsen or get aggravated by eating and drinking hot and cold foods and beverage. The weather can also worsen the situation.

Dental cavity is the most common cause of toothache. Dental cavities are holes in the two outer layers of the tooth called the enamel and the dentin. The enamel is the outermost white hard surface and the dentin is the yellow layer just beneath the enamel. Certain bacteria in the mouth that convert simple sugars to acid causing dental cavities. This acid softens and dissolves the enamel and dentin creating cavities.

While you really do need to get to the root of the problem with your dentist, here?s some home remedies that you can use until you can get an appointment:

When toothache occurs, avoid hot, cold or sweet drinks for this will help prevent pain from pulpitis.

Chewing cloves or rubbing clove oil on the tooth is good for toothache.

Mixture of crushed clove and peanut butter will provide relief. Apply this to the aching tooth and keep it in there for some time.

Make a solution of salt and water and gargle.

Turmeric sticks are good for toothache. Burn some turmeric sticks, make a fine powder, and use it as toothpowder.

Chew a clove slowly in the aching tooth to release the juice and leave it there for about half an hour. Do this three to four times.

Ginger is also good. Try to do the same procedure as the cloves and it gives same relief.

Drink juice of star fruit twice a day to get relief from the tooth pain.

Drops of vanilla extract on the affected tooth are an effective remedy.

Oil of oregano on the paining tooth is also effective.

You may also use Listerine antiseptic by gargling it.

Ice is a traditional relief for toothache. Chew a piece of ice on the aching side of the mouth, although in the case of cavity this may make it hurt more!

If the pain is prolonged and severe, painkillers may provide some relief.

You may be able to avoid the pain of toothache all together by keeping your teeth and gums clean and healthy. Try to avoid cavities by reducing the intake of sugary foods and drinks. Make them as an occasional treat and at meal times only. Brush your teeth and floss regularly.

Visiting the dentist every 6 months for a cleaning will help to ensure healthy teeth and gums. This way, you can avoid most toothache by catching any problems in their early stages where the treatment will be less severe.

Before you undergo any corrective method with the restorative dentist, make sure you know all about the procedure you are about to undergo. No one will like to be in the dark about anything that is being done to their teeth as this is vital to their look and appearance. After all you will not want to end up undergoing any procedure of which you are in the dark. If you have any doubts keep on asking questions till you are fully satisfied with the answers.

There are many restorative dentistry procedures, which can be undertaken to deal with different dental conditions. Losing teeth is something that can happen to anyone for various reasons. Aging is one of the major factors for the loss of teeth. Improper dental care can also lead to tooth decay and sometimes accidents can also lead to the loss of teeth. If you are a victim of this due to any of the mentioned causes or some other cause, help is at hand for you. Restorative dentists are perfectly capable of helping people suffering from such conditions.

Restorative dentist can correct cracks or chips in teeth as well as crooked, broken or damaged teeth. Restorative dentistry includes many other treatment and correction methods like implants, dental bridges, treatment for gum diseases and root canals. When performing a root canal procedure, they can either replace one tooth or many teeth based on the severity.

Following some simple dental habits can go a long way in keeping your teeth in good condition. Make sure to brush your teeth regularly, especially before going to bed. Floss your teeth and use mouthwash daily to keep your teeth in the best shape they can be in. Eat a balanced diet by including healthy food items in your daily diet. All these may appear to be very small, but these things go a long way in keeping your teeth healthy.

Mini Dental Implants in the U.S.

The concept of mini dental implants is a revolutionary method for supporting replacement teeth that used very small titanium alloy implant screws that would function free standing or in combination with natural tooth supports. The concept was pioneered over 20 years ago by a Dr. Victor I. Sendax, but not developed until 1997 after collaborating with a colleague, Dr. Ronald A. Bulard.

Mini dental implants were formally introduced to the dental industry at a conference in 1999 and today represent one of the fastest growing and most successful segments of the dental product industry.

In most cases, mini dental implants are used as a stabilization method for a lower denture. Over 50,000,000 people lacking teeth in the U.S. alone, and many of them experience frequent pain and discomfort as a result of loose-fitting dentures. With the aid of mini dental implants, the stability of the denture and subsequently the confidence of the wearer can be significantly improved.

For those seeking mini dental implant procedures, many dental offices in New York City and other large metropolitan areas boast decades of experience in dental implant research and surgery. Such offices make it possible to tighten and stabilize a loose-fitting denture in just one visit to the center.

The best offices cite shorter recovery times, lower cost and a lack of significant invasive surgery as the main benefits to those electing to seek mini dental implants as opposed to the standard variety. Implants can be set by of professional in just one hour and patients will leave with an increased confidence, ready to eat, smile and speak like they would with a full set of natural teeth. With virtually no discomfort on the part of the patient, mini dental implants are an attractive option for those individuals seeking cosmetic surgery.

Top-notch dental implant offices are located throughout the country, from Las Vegas and Los Angeles to New York City, including several mini dental implant centers in New Jersey, Boston, Chicago and Canada.

The Cost of Dental Implants

As a form of elective surgery, the cost of dental implants can often be considerably higher than that of a simple crown of cap. Prices can vary greatly depending on the specific procedure, doctor and expectations of the patient. The cost of a single implant can range from several hundred to several thousand dollars, with some individuals spending tens of thousands of dollars on a complete rehabilitation. On average, patients can expect to spend around $1500 per tooth for a quality dental implant.

The process is two-fold, and involves inserting the implant itself within the patient?s jawbone, then restoring the decayed or missing tooth with an artificial one. The result is a healthier looking, safer, more natural and longer-lasting smile. When one considers this fact, the additional cost of dental implants usually makes sense.

The materials used to produce modern dental implants are costly themselves, not to mention the entire team of dental specialists needed to properly conduct the procedure. But when one considers that, unlike most parts of the human body, teeth can maintain their youthful allure for one?s entire lifespan with proper care, dental implant prices are more than justified.

Unlike the insertion of dental caps or bridges, which often have an adverse effect on adjacent teeth or gums, implants offer far superior long-term benefits. The resulting winning smile from a bridge can be short-lived compared to that of the high-tech dental implant, which does not rely on support from neighboring teeth and consequently causes no short or long-term damage.

The results are safer, more attractive and very consistent in adults with generally good oral health. Candidates who may be lacking good dental and oral hygiene are recommended to consult an expert before seeking dental implants. As always, precautions must be taken before electing to undergo any surgery and a responsible practitioner will only operate on a health candidate.

Clean Tongues For Fresher Breath

You always brush your pearly-whites, you gargle antiseptic mouth rinses, and you floss. Throw in regular dental check-ups and you'll think that you're the poster boy for oral hygiene. What if I tell you that you're forgetting something? Crazy, right? Nope, because you're forgetting your tongue. You taste with it, you lick with it, and when temptation arises, you even wag it. Don't you think it's high time to start cleaning it? After all, I'm sure you don't want to sport a white, abnormal-looking tongue.

An oft-neglected part of oral hygiene, tongues are not flat and smooth even if they appear that way to you. They have fissures which make for suitable anaerobic bacteria breeding places. This bacteria is the major source of stink breaths. Plus, you won't be able to remove the viscous, jelly-like film of plaque covering your tongue through rinsing. What you must do is to scrape it. Scared? Don't be; because cleaning your tongue takes no effort. You could do it in as little as a 1-2 minutes.

Before you do that, read up to avoid scrubbing your tongue raw. First, you don't have to buy special tongue cleaners since your regular toothbrush will do. However, tongue cleaners are easier to maneuver. Use a bit of toothpaste for added bacteria-fighting power. Secondly, hard scraping is not needed. When your toothbrush or tongue cleaner makes contact with your tongue, it's okay. Third, use short, slow strokes. Also, make sure that no space is left unclean. Try to move your brush from the back towards the front. Also, relax your mouth after a few seconds with a gargle to avoid locked jaws and gagging. Fourth, pay close attention to the back of the tongue, more bacteria are there than up front. After you've scrape all tongue surface area, rinse, and apply a second coat of toothpaste. Leave the paste on for at least a minute. It is ideal to let the paste on until you finish brushing your teeth. After your last gargle, give yourself a smile and vow to add tongue cleaning as part of your oral hygiene.

But of course, don't get any ideas that tongue cleaning can stop stink breaths alone. Be reminded that you still have to clean your teeth and gums. Dental check-ups are still a must. After all, only your dentist would ask about your oral hygiene and praise your clean, healthy tongue.

ToothWhitening in a Nutshell

Tooth Whitening ? To Be or Not to Be?

Not satisfied with the color of your teeth? Do not despair. You can literally buy yourself a whiter smile! Though tooth whitening is not a dentally required procedure, it could greatly enhance your self-esteem and improve your appearance. There are several tooth whitening products and techniques currently available. Basically these can be divided into two groups:

(a) Dental Office Whitening involves a trip to your dentist. A mold of your teeth and gums is made, filled with peroxide, fitted onto your teeth and gums and left on for one to two hours. Three to four of such visits later and your pearly whites are officially whitened! A more advanced form of this technique is Laser Bleaching. Here concentrated peroxide gel is applied and activated by a special light, usually Argon. This speeds up the whitening process considerably, though it is more expensive.

(b) At-Home Whitening is much less expensive and more convenient than Dental Office Whitening but is not as effective. Brush-on gels, strips, or trays with bleaching gels are used. Their peroxide concentration is considerably lower than professional tooth whitening; hence they are not as effective. Also, over-the-counter at-home products may contain alcohol, abrasives or acids, all with unpleasant side effects.

Teeth whitening can lighten the color of your teeth several shades, depending on the method chosen. Its effects could last from six months to three years. However, these procedures only work on natural teeth, not dentures, crowns or veneers.

Care of whitened teeth includes twice-daily brushing with fluoride toothpaste, cutting down on sugary snacks and drinks, and those which stain the teeth (e.g. tea, red wine, and coffee). You should definitely consider stopping smoking. Also, a visit to your dentist at least once a year is a must. Side effects, though temporary, may include sensitivity to cold, gum discomfort, sore throat and white patches on the gum line. However, these usually clear up within days of completing the treatment.

Still want to buy a whiter smile? Why not head straight for your dentist?s office? She can assess your suitability right away. Your dream of whiter teeth could come true sooner than you think!

Restorative Dentistry Procedure for Bringing Back Your Smile!

Restorative dentistry is the branch of dentistry which deals with correcting dental defects in individuals. All of us like to have pearly white teeth devoid of any defect. However everyone is not so lucky and has to encounter dental defects at some time or the other. Restorative dentists can do various restorative dentistry procedures to help individuals in dealing with the different types of dental conditions. Restorative dentistry procedures to be undertaken for a dental condition depend on the overall dental health of the person.

There are different types of restorative dentistry procedures which can be undertaken for correcting a dental condition. Patients require different types of treatment procedures depending on the condition which they are facing. Understanding the present condition of your dental health is ideal in determining the treatment procedure for a condition. Some of the restorative dentistry procedures are discussed below:

Dental implants: Implants are an ideal means to replace broken teeth. This is a permanent solution for tooth loss. Implants are in fact artificial tooth which is used by a restorative dentist to replace missing tooth/teeth. Missing teeth can cause lots of difficulty while chewing food, talking properly and most important of all, smiling broadly. Implants are attached to the jawbone underneath the gums for providing support to dentures and tooth bridges.

Dental bridges: Bridges are the ideal solution for filling gaps, which appear due to missing teeth. As the term itself implies, a dental bridge bridges the gap due to missing teeth. Dental bridges are made up of a false tooth held together by two crowns. The false teeth are known as pontics. These can be made up of alloys, porcelain or gold as wanted by the individual.

Dental crown: This is another restorative dentistry procedure which can be adopted for restoring broken or decayed tooth. Sometimes a tooth can become decayed or broken, but the root can still be in perfectly good condition. Dental crowns are the perfect solution for individuals facing this condition. Dental crowns provide a covering for the entire broken or decayed tooth which is above the gum line to give strength to the broken teeth.

Porcelain veneers: Veneers are best source to correct broken, chipped or cracked teeth. Thin wafer like layer of porcelain is used to bond the cracked or broken portion of the teeth. The bonding can be done both chemically and physically as well. The porcelain veneers available these days are very thin and natural looking. No one will recognize that the bondings are artificial. Of course unless you tell someone, there is no way to find out.

Porcelain crowns: This is another means to correct dental defects. Porcelain crowns are a type of restoration which can be used for covering the portion of teeth which has dark metal color fillings. The dark fillings in teeth look very ugly when a person smiles broadly. Porcelain crowns can be used for covering such dark colored fillings.

There are many other restorative dentistry procedures which can be used for correcting dental defects. Advanced technology has made it possible to correct almost any type of dental defects. All you need to do is consult with a dentist and find out which procedure is best for treating your condition. I am sure you will not compromise on your smile when you have help at hand for correcting your smile.

Things You Can Do to Live a Lot Longer than You Think

Things You Can Do to Live a Lot Longer than You Think

Our leader asked us for specific articles. One of his request was: Anti-Aging - Techniques, tips and methods for staving off Father Time.

Who is Father Time anyway? How did he get it into his head to kill everybody? It just isn?t fair. We need to attack him, trip him up, block him, and finally, kill HIM. Then we can live forever or even longer.

I tried to find a Father Time joke on the internet. I failed, so as usual I?ll write my own joke:

A farmer was working in the barn and a tall thin person in a black cape and a black pointed hat came in to see him. He was from the ?black branch? of the Ku Klux Klan. This dark character carried a scythe over his shoulder. The farmer grabbed the scythe and said, ?We?ve been looking for that scythe for ages. Damn Thief!? He grabbed the scythe, gave the black character a kick in the pants, and sent him running out into the fields.

The scythe is the tool of the Grim Reaper. He is Father Time in disguise. A scythe is a farming tool used to cut down grain. It is a wooden rod with a stem. The top end of the rod and also the stem has a handle or grip. The grips are parallel to the rod. At the end of the rod you will find the ring, tang, heel, beard, chine and toe. The chine does the cutting. You young folks will want to take a look at a scythe at http://www.scythesupply.com/.

The scythe is what the Grim Reaper uses to cut you down. That?s not what we want to happen. Here are some ways to hex the Grim Reaper alias Father Time.

Send some of your kids to medical school.

That?s what I did. If I say ?I had a little bump in my chest last week,? one of my doctor sons will say, ?Get down to the emergency room, NOW!?

I say, ?I?ll go tomorrow. I?ve got to take the boys fishing.?

He says, ?Dad! Get your butt down there!?

When I get there the emergency room physician is already talking to my son and he starts testing me for everything from Abrin to Zoster.

Does the Amount of Dental InfectionsRoot Canal Infections Influence the Severity of Disease?

When infected teeth produce disturbance in other parts of the body, it is not necessary that the quantity of infection be large, nor is it demonstrated that it is necessary that organisms pass throughout the body or to the special tissues involved, but the evidence at hand strongly suggests that soluble poisons may pass from the infected teeth to the lymph or blood circulation, or both, and produce systemic disturbance entirely out of proportion to the quantity of poison involved.

The evidence indicates that toxic substance may under certain circumstances sensitize the body or special tissues so that very small quantities of the organisms, which produce that toxin, may produce very marked reactions and disturbances.

The nature and results of the numerous Dr. Price investigations are a continuous source of amazement.

For example, in pondering how bacteria could survive in dentin tubules when they become sealed off by the root canal filling, Dr.Price devised a method of dehydrating teeth - that is, measuring the amount of moisture they contain.

In doing this experiment, Dr. Price found root filled teeth contained fluid of sufficient quantity to be culture medium which would nourish bacteria.

Another question which interested Dr. Price was whether the bacteria in infected teeth soley responsible for the illnesses which occurred to rabbits after infected teeth were imbedded under their skins.

He found that by extracting infected teeth, crushing them, and then washing the powder, bacteria could still be found in the liquid. When he put the liquid in a centrifuge, the centrifugal force spun off the bacteria and sedimment, leaving a clear liquid.

When Dr. Price injected a small amount of this clear liquid into a rabbit, it lost 25 percent of its weight in four weeks and it died in the fifth week. Its brother rabbit, used as the control animal and not injected, continued to thrive and gain weight.

The Safety and Effectiveness of Whitening Products

The Council on Scientific Affairs of the American Dental Association or ADA has been following closely the development of whitening products. And the demand for these products is increasing greatly. ADA recognizes the importance of setting down standard definitions when talking about tooth whitening products.

?Whitening?, for example, us the process that will render the teeth whiter or atleast make it appear whiter. There are 2 ways that can achieve this. One is actually changing the natural tooth color, making it whiter. Bleaching products contain peroxide which not only removes surface or extrinsic discoloration but also the acts to penetrate the deep or intrinsic stains. On the other hand, non-bleaching products only have agents that only remove surface stains by chemical or physical action.

These products can be dispensed and/or administered by a dentist or bought by the patient directly from a drugstore, which is called over-the-counter products. All of these can be divided into 2 major groups.

Peroxide-containing whiteners or bleaching agents

Whitening products and for home-use OTC products carrying the ADA Seal of Acceptance contain 10% carbamide peroxide. But there are also compliant non-members and the consumers are left with many options to choose from. ADA advices people to consult their dentist first before applying any bleaching solution.

For water-based whitening solutions, hydrogen peroxide?the active ingredient?is produced as a by-product by the breakdown of a carbamide peroxide. The other by-product is urea. The other ingredients of tooth bleachers that contains peroxide are: carbopol, sodium hydroxide, glycerine and flavoring agents.

Carbamide peroxide has a neutral pH of 10 and so is trusted as a safe and effective bleacher. The only common side effects of using carbamide peroxide or hydrogen are tooth sensitivity and irritation in the oral mucosa or the soft tissues in the mouth specifically the gums. During the early stages of the whitening treatment, tooth sensitivity is often observed. Tissue irritation, more often than not, is caused by an ill-fitted nightguard or tray and not by the bleaching agents themselves. These two side effects are only temporary though.

For whitening products that are professionally administered, there are also many kinds. The concentrations of the hydrogen peroxide contained in these products range from 15 percent to 35 percent. These are often used with a light or laser that accelerates the whitening action. Utilizing a rubber dam or protective gel, gum tissues are isolated before the products are applied. Unlike products uses at home which takes up to 4 weeks before any visible signs of improvement are seen, professionally administered bleachers works in just about an hour.

Whitening toothpastes

Also known as dentrifices by oral health care professionals, whitening toothpastes with the ADA Seal of Acceptance contain chemical agents act as a polisher by removing surface discoloration to affect tooth whitening.

Jan Thomsen has a lot of experience in dental hygiene and has helped thousands of people get that coveted bright smile using advanced Tooth Whitening methods.

Cosmetic Dentistry Know Your Options

Your smile is your welcome sign to the world, and you want that sign to be the best one on the block. If you weren?t lucky enough to be born with a show-stopping smile and perfectly straight, white teeth there is hope for you yet. The world of cosmetic dentistry can fix any dental problem from missing teeth to yellow teeth to the most crooked of smiles.

When you are thinking of having any type of cosmetic dentistry done, the first step is to find a qualified dentist, on that is a member of the AACD (American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry) this will help to ensure that he is well versed in all areas of cosmetic dentistry.

When interviewing possible choices for a dentist, ask to see his portfolio of before and after photos of previous patients, this will give you an idea of the quality of the work that is being performed. Always ask for references from these patients, ask them how they feel about the work that has been done for them. Finally find out about any education that has been completed since the dentist has been practicing dentistry. It is important that education is kept up to date with the advances that are being made in this field.

The most common form of this type of dentistry is the use of braces. Braces are generally put on adolescent children beginning at around age 12, by a qualified orthodontist. The area of orthodontics deals with the straightening and realigning of teeth. This treatment not only beautifies the smile, but by realigning the mouth orthodontics can also eliminated future problems of the jaw. The type of cosmetic dentistry that is more common with adults includes teeth whitening, the placement of veneers and bonding. These procedures are solely for cosmetic reasons and have no health benefits associated with them; however, the emotional benefits from these types of procedure can be huge.

Teeth whitening is growing in popularity due in part to the availability of at home systems. These systems make it possible to get a whiter, brighter smile without the cost and inconvenience of visiting a dentist office. There is also the option of in office bleaching, this is done under the supervision of the dentist and generally takes about an hour per each application.

It is wise to consult with your dentist as to which whitening product is right for your teeth, as not all teeth take to bleaching in the same manner. Your dentist will help you decide which type is right for your teeth as well as for your budget.

Bonding is done to either repair a chipped or cracked tooth, to cover an exposed root or for strictly cosmetic reasons. In any of these cases, the tooth or teeth to be treated are cleaned and then have an etching solution applied. This solution will help the resin composite to bond with the tooth. There are several different colors of resin available to match the color of the teeth. The resin is then shaped so that the new teeth have the desired shape to them; the resin will then harden and finally be polished to a shine so that they match the rest of the teeth in the mouth.

Veneering teeth is becoming increasingly popular as a way to cover up fillings, chipped teeth, stained teeth or gaps in the teeth. A veneer is a thin porcelain shell that fits directly over the tooth in question and is bonded in place. The veneers can also give the appearance of straight teeth with out the time that is involved with braces; however, they are the more expensive of the two options.

What are Dental Implants?

Dental implants offer many advantages over traditional tooth replacement procedures. Gone are the days when patients were forced to simply wear unsightly or uncomfortable caps, crowns or dentures. Often insecure and artificial looking, these solutions left people unable to talk and eat with confidence. Dental implants minimize the risks associated with crowns and caps, while maximizing the rewards by producing natural looking, healthy and most of all safer teeth that let recipients smile with conviction.

Dental implants are essentially artificial teeth that that are placed within the jaw. Although they are typically more aesthetically pleasing that the alternatives like crowns or dentures, the real reason many people are turning to dental implants to replace their missing teeth boils down to safety. Implants are a safer, more tooth-friendly procedure that has little to no adverse effect on neighboring teeth or gums.

When a patient elects to insert a bridge in support of missing or decayed teeth, adjacent teeth are usually altered to support the procedure. Over time this leads to gum and dental erosion. With implants, the replacement tooth looks virtually identical to the real thing, and the patient suffers nothing in terms of later tooth decay.

Today there are two dental implant procedures that most periodontists employ:

Endosteal is the most common procedure. Here, various types of screws, cylinders or blades are selected for insertion directly into the jawbone, with each implant holding one or more prosthetic teeth.

Subperiosteal is a less common alternative that is used for patients who are unable to wear dentures and have minimal bone height. The implants are placed on top of the jaw with the metal framework inserted into gums.

Dental implants typically have a very high success rate, but typically require a patient that is in good overall health. Since we are dealing with invasive surgery, candidates who experience advanced gum disease or weak jaw bones may not be approved for the procedure. But for those that do qualify, they can expect a healthy, natural-looking smile that will, provided they continue with proper dental hygiene, last for years to come.

Locations offering dental implant surgery are located all across the country, particularly in the Northeast (New York, New Jersey and Boston), Nevada (Las Vegas and Summerlin), Los Angeles as well as various locations in Canada.

Dental Implants Info provides comprehensive information on the procedure and cost of standard and mini dental implants, and focuses on the Las Vegas, Los Angeles and New York regions. Dental Implants Info is the sister site of Rhinoplasty Web.

The Root Canal Bacteria Dental Infection Bacteria Often Attacked The Heart and Circulatory System

Sixteen heart and other circulatory disease conditions were mentioned as disease problems which can occur as effect to the presence of root canal filled teeth.

Such a large number of different heart involvement conditions is surprising as during World War I it was disclosed that 10 to 11 percent of all deaths in United States and England were due to heart involve- ment, and at that time most cases involved the heart valves.

During that period most doctors believed these heart cases were caused by streptococcus infections and that this organism species was involved in 90 percent of such cases. The major cause for infective endo- carditis according to the Mayo Clinic Health Letter in 1986 was the streptococcus veridans family of bacteria - the very same one Dr. Price found most often araising from infected teeth.

The number of deaths from heart disease has increased from 10 percent during Dr. Price's time to over 50 percent of all deaths today. In view of Dr. Price's disclosures about the relationship of root canal therapy to the high number of heart cases and other degenerative diseases related to endodontic treatment, the time is overdue for the dental profession to reassess its role in the occurrence of these diseases.

A good example of the seriousness of this enquiry can be seen in the endocarditis case of nine year old girl. She had been bedridden for five of her nine years. A culture made from her two infected baby teeth was injected into the ear veins of three rabbits, each of which developed endocarditis and myocarditis, and one of them also developed rheumatism. One of the rabbits developed the largest heart ever seen in a rabbit.

Number of other heart conditions were covered in this chapter. Many of the cases proved difficult to classify as the patients were suffering from several organ or tissue disturbances all at the same time.

Investigations revealed that in a good number of these cases patients made substantial recoveries when root canal filled teeth were removed!!!!

Phlebitis cases were few in number, but the infection of a culture from a woman patient with phlebitis caused a rabbit's ear to swell 10 to 20 times the thickness it had been. In addition, the rabbit developed an acute gall bladder disturbance, multiple ulsers, and infections of the walls of the blood vessels.

The case discussed and shown are only a small percentage of heart and circulation cases presented in the two Dr. Price books, but they are representative.

Why these focal infection cases clear up and don't just continue on after the infected tooth or teeth are removed is a question often asked. Undoubtedly, when the condition has persisted for a long period, healing is not fully possible, but it is the getting rid of the continual outpouring of bacteria and their toxins from the infected teeth which enables the body's immune system to get rid of the infection at the focal infection site and allows the body to heal itself.

Tooth Whitening Secrets: In House Enjoyment

Tooth whitening is a process in which the teeth color is lightened. The shading of the teeth is made in different grades by adaptation of different kinds of methods comprising both in house methods and office methods. Tooth whitening has to do with a tooth that gets darkly colored view due to aging, usage of colored beverages that can stain the teeth including coffee, tea and others.

Tooth whitening is useful for many persons who take responsibility of the appearance of their stained tooth. The whitening is carried out using the white strips that can be applied on the tooth structures along with the bleaching substance. Just after the gap of thirty minutes, the strips may be taken out. Like this, for a period of seven days the procedure is to be carried out patiently and the teeth get light color. However, due to over enthusiasm one should not resort to unwanted technique to have tooth whitening. Certain persons may spoil their tooth by using lemon juice frequently over the teeth. On such persons the vitamin C in the lemon juice reduces the calcium level of teeth and the tooth gets loosened and may become highly vulnerable to the fracture. Similarly, many stories are there about the persons who want the tooth whitening.

Few persons even go to the extent of application of baking soda continuously and this leads to erosion of teeth. The person using hydrogen peroxide solution in a more concentrated manner may end up in over bleaching. Hence care is required on tooth whitening. Bleaching gel that has ADA seal for safety and effectiveness may be used as one of the significant products useful for tooth whitening. A tray containing the bleaching gel is placed over the teeth in a fitting manner and is gently pressed. Most of the times, within six to seven days the desired effects are apparent in such persons.

Though light is being used, still many debate on the usage of the light in the tooth whitening. The laser light is being used in a more careful manner to make a better whitening effect on the teeth structures. One should remember that the tooth whitening occurs mainly due to the bleaching effects of the often used chemical agent, however, there are some home made techniques that can cause the same effects like brushing with barks of numb trees, walnut tree and others. Special toothbrush can make vibrations to assist in the tooth whitening process. In conclusion, getting whitening teeth is healthy, smart and enjoyable. Get one done today.

Teeth Whitening: Frequently Asked Questions

Overview

Teeth whitening is one of the easiest ways to improve your appearance. Whiter teeth can boost your self-esteem and confidence. Years of drinking coffee, tea, cola, red wine, and smoking eventually takes their toll on teeth. The results are dull, yellowish-colored teeth. Some teeth may have darker gray-colored stains due to antibiotics. Most teeth will benefit from tooth whitening. Teeth whitening is a proven safe and effective way to brighten stained, discolored teeth.

Your dentist has a variety of methods for restoring a bright white smile including porcelain veneers, composite bonding, implants and whitening, also known as bleaching. However, of all the advances made in dentistry to enhance the appearance of the teeth, whitening is the easiest and least invasive, and effective for 3 out of 4 cases. The procedure is safe, simple, and more affordable than ever before. Because of these reasons and more, whitening has become very popular.

Should I consult a dentist about teeth whitening?

You may want to start by speaking with your dentist. They can tell you whether whitening procedures would be effective for you. Whiteners may not correct all types of discoloration. For example, yellowish hued teeth will probably bleach well, brownish-colored teeth may not bleach as well, and grayish-hued teeth may not bleach well at all.

Bleaching may not enhance your smile in the event you have had bonding or tooth-colored fillings placed in your front teeth. The whitener will not affect the color of these materials and they will stand out in your newly whitened smile. You may want to investigate other options in this case such as porcelain veneers or dental bonding.

What teeth whitening methods are available to me?

All whitening products contain peroxide either as carbamide peroxide (CP) or hydrogen peroxide (HP). Peroxide dissolves the organic stains in the tooth to change the color and produce a whitened effect.

There are four types of peroxide-containing tooth whitening products available:

* In-practice products are applied by a dental professional. These products contain a high percentage of CP or HP and are applied directly to the teeth. Some activated by heat, light, or laser. This may be the product for you if you?re in a hurry for whiter teeth and you don?t have tooth sensitivity. For very dark-colored teeth, the whitening process can be sped up in two to three hours followed by a take-home product until the desired whiteness is achieved.

* A take-home product supervised by a dentist is the most popular whitening method. These products contain a lesser percentage of CP or HP than in-practice products and are worn in a tray overnight or during the day at home. A custom-fitted tray is made to hold the whitening product directly against the teeth while lessening its contact with the gums. Some products have fluoride added to help prevent or treat mild tooth sensitivities. The typical stains of ageing will whiten in seven to fourteen days when the tray is worn overnight.

* Over-the-counter (OTC) whitening products contain a small percentage of HP or CP. Caution should be used with these products as many contain an acidic solution that can wear away tooth enamel. OTC products use a bulky, one-size-fits-all tray to hold the product. Usually more product is swallowed than stays in the tray because of the trays poor fit against the teeth. It can take up to six months and the purchase of several kits to get whiter teeth. Flexible strips coated with whitening gel have recently been introduced as an OTC at-home tooth whitening method. The strips are worn on the front teeth and folded over to keep them in place. Results are reported to be noticeable after fourteen days and effective for 6 months.

* Over-the-counter whitening toothpastes contain a small percentage of HP, CP, or polishing ingredient. The toothpastes are effective in keeping teeth cleaner and whiter looking but some may be very abrasive. The harsh abrasive will wear away the enamel with repeated use gradually making the teeth look yellow. Whitening toothpastes remove surface stains and prevent new stains from building up. Whitening toothpastes however aren?t in contact with the teeth long enough to remove internal stains. Ask your dentist about the safety and cavity protection of specific toothpastes before you buy.

How should I choose a teeth whitening method?

It is highly advisable to inform your dentist about your goals regarding teeth whitening. They can advise you about the most suitable method and also outline the procedure, likely results, side effects and address any questions you may have.

How does teeth whitening achieve results?

The bleaching gel is usually hydrogen or carbamide peroxide that breaks down into oxygen molecules. These molecules go into the tiny pores of the enamel and dentin and break up the stains that block out the light. More light passes through the teeth and makes them look lighter as the stains are broken into smaller and smaller pieces. Stains that are accumulated over time that are yellow to slightly brown produce the best results. Teeth that are dark brown to blue-grey are the most difficult to bleach because the stain is deeply embedded in the structure of the tooth. These types of stains are usually caused by medications taken during the development of the teeth such as tetracycline and can take a minimum of three weeks to see results and as much as six months for complete results.

Results can be seen within an hour, overnight or within three to four days depending on the bleaching gel used and the length of time it is worn. Complete results can be achieved in as little as a week or as much as several months depending on the source of the stain and the ability of the teeth or tooth to be bleached. The whitening procedure may last for up to three years and even longer in some cases depending on personal habits. A simple process of bleaching for one or two nights with a single gel syringe is usually sufficient to brighten the color again.

What takes place at the initial visit to the dentist?

You will be able to talk with your dentist about the changes you would like to make in your appearance at the first visit with your dentist. Your dentist will explain the different options available to you, the procedure itself, and its risks and limitations.

Your dentist will begin with a complete medical history and examine your teeth. They may also take photos or x-rays and give you specific instructions on how to prepare for the procedure. Any large cavities may need to be addressed before bleaching can begin. Take this opportunity to ask all the questions you have about the procedure. Learning everything you can about your options, risks and benefits is the key to making an informed decision.

How are the treatments carried out?

There are three types of bleaching procedures to choose from. Two of them are performed in the dental practice and the third is a take-home self-administered treatment.

* In-Practice whitening procedures

For laser and power bleaching, a dentist begins by applying a protective material to your gums and lips in order to isolate the teeth. A special bleaching solution usually containing hydrogen peroxide is applied to the teeth. A high intensity light or laser is directed at the teeth and activates the bleaching agent causing the gel to release the oxygen molecules. Treatments for both power and laser bleaching can take as little as 45 minutes but usually last somewhere between one and two hours.

These techniques work great for a single discolored tooth as well. The bleaching solution is placed on the outside of the tooth if the tooth has become dark due to trauma but has not had a root canal. The solution can be placed on the outside as well as the inside of the tooth if the tooth has had a root canal. Leaving a bleaching solution inside the tooth and sealing the opening is referred to as ?walking bleach?. The solution inside the tooth for a walking bleach is changed about once a week. Results can take several weeks but nothing has to be worn in the mouth.

* Take-home whitening

Take-home bleaching is performed at home under the indirect supervision of a dentist. The dentist takes impressions of the patient?s teeth and then creates a perfectly fitted mouthguard at the first appointment. This mouthguard will allow the patient to apply a bleaching solution to the teeth while protecting the rest of the mouth from contact with the bleaching chemicals.

The concentration of hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide in the gel is not as strong as that used in power or laser bleaching procedures. No strong light source or laser is needed to activate the bleaching agent. It is contact with the teeth that causes the gel to release oxygen. Take-home bleaching in most cases can take from one to three weeks to achieve maximum results. The dentist during this time may want to check the progress of the treatment.

Will I experience any discomfort?

The amount of discomfort experienced varies from person to person and depends on the method used. Most adults usually experience little if any discomfort. An over-the-counter anti-inflammatory may help in the case of some discomfort. Consult your dentist for more options if the discomfort lasts for more than 2 to 3 days.

Decreasing the sensitivity may be as easy as placing a gel fluoride under your dentist?s instruction in your bleaching tray for an hour or so. Other materials may be used to address the sensitivity you may experience. Check with your dentist for the best options for your particular needs.

You should discuss your goals, budget, and pain tolerance with your dentist in order to help them determine the procedure, or combination of procedures, that will produce the best results for you.

What can I expect after teeth whitening?

The results of teeth whitening vary but most people are happy with the results. Patients should avoid foods that stain such as tobacco and red wine for about a week after any bleaching treatment. Keeping teeth clean with flossing and brushing can maintain whiteness. Tooth bleaching lasts on average about 1 to 3 years. Bleaching may last even longer if you are not a regular tobacco user and do not eat many foods that are known to stain teeth.

Decalcified spots are white spots that affect the calcium in the enamel. These spots appear chalky white and are difficult to treat with just bleaching. Your dentist may recommend a procedure called micro-abrasion. This procedure can be done by itself or in conjunction with bleaching. The micro-abrasion material is much like the paste used to clean and polish teeth. The paste consists of an abrasive combined with a hydrochloric acid used to ?polish? out the white or brown spots. The procedure can be performed usually in one practice visit and can be done without anesthesia.

How long will the teeth whitening last?

The effects of the teeth whitening should last for 1 to 3 years. Daily brushing and flossing will assist in maintaining the whiteness. The duration of the whiteness will also depend on your personal habits. Drinking red wine, tea, coffee or smoking will shorten the life of the new whiteness. You may want to conduct a re-treatment in the future. This should not be as costly and time consuming as the original whitening procedure as you will already have the custom made trays.

Am I an ideal candidate for teeth whitening?

In general, the best candidates for teeth whitening are:

? Mature enough to fully understand the procedure
? Experiencing stained and marked teeth
? Knowledgeable about the procedure
? Wanting to improve their appearance and confidence
? Realistic in their expectations

The above is only a partial list of the criteria that your dentist will consider in determining whether or not this procedure is appropriate for you. Be sure to ask your dentist if they consider you an ideal candidate for this procedure.

Are there any alternatives?

Teeth that have dark stains may be better candidates for another whitening option such as veneers, bonding, or crowns. Your dentist can discuss the options best suited for your situation.

Patients interested in whitening their teeth should consult a dentist before taking on any form of treatment whatsoever. A consultation with a dentist will help you understand the benefits and risks associated with each of the options.

What are the risks and limitations?

Bleaching can produce side effects ranging from increased tooth sensitivity to pain and tenderness in the gums, tongue and other soft tissues. There is also a possibility of over-bleaching. The result will be a translucency that may appear grey from the shadows of the mouth. There is a very low percentage of this occurring and only if the bleaching process is over-extended. Having a dentist supervise the process can eliminate this risk.

With take-home bleaching there is a small risk of ingesting the gel administered by the dentist. The chances of this occurring are relatively small since your bleaching tray should fit almost perfectly around your teeth. However, if the gel is ingested, it may result in nausea, vomiting or burning. You should contact a doctor immediately if this occurs to you.

How do I choose an appropriate dentist?

It is very important you select a dentist adequately trained and experienced in teeth whitening. Your dentist is most likely equipped to administer teeth whitening. They will be able to assist you achieve your goals pertaining to teeth whitening.

What questions should I ask my dentist?

1. Are the desired results I described realistic?

2. Is there an alternative treatment that I should consider as well?

3. How long will the procedure take?

4. How much does it cost?

5. What is your experience in performing this procedure?

6. Have many patients had significant complications?

7. Can you give me some idea of the result I will achieve after the teeth whitening?

8. What should I expect after the procedure and what things should I avoid?

Anything else I should know?

? Tell your dentist about any allergies you have to foods, drugs, vinyl, peroxide, or environmental elements.

? Tell your dentist about all medications you are taking including prescription and non-prescription.

? Carefully follow any instructions your dentist gives you.
